Fog

It gets bloody foggy here in north waikato.
One morning it was so foggy visibility was about 1/2 foot in front of my car bumper.
At a certain time of year it will stay foggy for the entire day.
I don't want to stop riding because of the weather, so any tips for riding in really crap visibility?

Yeah, I know what you mean, living in The Tron...

I've used RainX on the visor to some effect. ie, It takes longer for the visor to completely block out after RainX treatment. Still blocks up, but I don't have to wipe as often.

If it's that foggy you will probably end up riding slowly with your visor up. It's quite invigorating. Sounds obvious but I always have a wee cloth stashed somewhere handy to wipe my visor in inclement weather. Bikes are VERY hard to see in the fog & the lights are mis-leading to other vehicles, be extra cautious.

Another thing to watch out for is the way the fog sits in hollows. If the road dips you'll be getting into thicker stuff., good time to ease off.

Normal things like visor up or clean, and ride to what you can see, The big problem is other people that cant see you. I worked in Makara,[ south coast of wellington,] and we worked in very thick fog and mist, We would always see the orange flashing lights before vehicle headlights or sidelights. Im not saying you should get flashing lights but orange LED would be my choice to be seen.

I did run into a sheep in the fog once not so very long ago...dunno which of us was more surprised...

yep i wear glasses.
also the otha nite it was raining and i hit a really big patch of tar. No stone, pure tar bleed only. Me rear tyre started sliding left then right, my bumhole shrunk quite a lot. I backed off the gas, which I take is natural reflex? and she righted herself. On the way home, I rode very very carefully. And noticed just how much tar bleed there is on the state highway up here north of huntly. bloody dangerous as.

i lived in hamilton for a decade or so and know where you are coming from........
Used to use the visor up technique to good effect.

however. if you have a car perhaps use it on the thickest of days to be a little safer.........its not like you will be having fun hooning round corners at high speed on those days anyway.

excellent advice here, but my vote these days goes to 'take the car' Do you really want to take on the risks of being collected by some speeding twit in a 4x4?
