move back in with mum and dad, the rent is cheaper, plus no one cooks better than mum, (but don't ever till your girl friend or wife) they will never under stand.
and as the others have said,
select the events you want to do,
buddy up with someone whos doing the same event, shared cost.
Why would you ride that long and that gnarly stuff if you don't have to, Its what we do, we love it.

If you need money you do one of two things- minimise costs or maximise income.
To minimise costs and keep a vehicle that is cheap to run perhaps suss out the tourist backpacker market who have done their touring and are looking to sell their diesel van? Cheap to run and the govt don't chase too hard on ya RUC's so you can let em slide. That way you can put the bike inside and bed down anywhere with a basic cooker set with a flat bit of MDF to put yer sleeping bag down on = no accomm. costs
To maximise income - assuming you stay in Waitara and serve out your apprenticeship then the best thing is perk jobs - if you develop a reputation where you will drop most anything (except riding) and do it then word will get around. Everyone is a customer. If you can handle being permanently on-call and are willing to broaden your skills, then, with a good clientbase, you'll have more work than you can shake a stick at. It probably means giving up drinking more than the odd single tho..
    Good luck
