A bad day - Dreaded knock in my KLR and lost licence plate 20YDS

    G'day
Thought I could detect a noise at 3600 - 4k so took the bike for a spin today (awesome day here in chch) over some "rough" and smooth stuff to work out what it was. Went North bank of the Waimak just over the old bridge and then went up past the MX tracks and another 10 or so ks got back home and discovered I had lost my Rego plate - a couple of questions for you experienced hands
    1. Anybody see my rego plate 20YDS - and how the hell do I go about getting another one - sods law was really in effect as I had my Rego and Warrent stickers both attached to the plate - lost all three!
    2. Any ideas on a (hopefully not engine - still couldn't work it out) knock which seems to be very locallised to between 3600 and 4000 rpm?
Really want to try and sort both problems by Friday as I am supposed to be heading up to Kaikoura and the Clarence Reserve on Saturday
    Cheers, Crim

How old is the oil? My 08 is noisier than a bag of skeletons rooting if the oil isn't replaced regularly. Have you readjusted your doohickey lately? May be the chain is a bit loose. I'm getting a noise from my back end which may either be the kickstand hitting/ or the tyre hitting the chainguard so I know how annoying it is trying to find the sound.

I'd swap the oil first & see how that goes.
As far as your licence plate I lost mine & I think it was about $8.00 to replace at any AA place or similar. The Wof is computorised but I may have had to get another one - can't remember. Look up the on road website

go down to VTNZ and with ID and $8.80 and they will get you to fill out a form and give you a new plate with rego. I'm not sure how much the warrant will cost though, but they can do it for you too. It will be a new Number you get though
All of this, all of this can be yours, Just give me what I want and no one gets hurt

Thanks guys - sounds easier replacing plates and stuff than I thought - just changed the oil - 500ks or so again - have been adjusting the balancer chain regularly (but not tapping the case with rubber mallet as some suggest) and trying NOT to look at changing the Doohickey but might have to bite the bullet and do that at some stage

Ffs do the doo, I was in lala land thinking mine would be ok and all the guys on the net were talkin crap, till last week when I got bored and checked mine. Broken spring was just flopping around in there, therefore externally adjusting the doo would have actually been loosening the balance chain tension as there is no ratchett on it like a cam chain tensioner.

Btw mine is an 05 as well and has only done 25500 kms.

Nordie is right about the chain too, they get real noisy just prior to breaking.
I mentioned vegetables once, but I think I got away with it...........

I'm about to head off on that exact same ride and will keep an eye out for your plate.
Damned things. Mine fell off too, if it makes you feel any better

Are you able to coast downhill in neutral to isolate that knocking?
Or is it only there when the motor is under load?

Hope you can sort it before that Clarence ride.

Number plate is easy. I lost mine on Grays Rd last week. Go to a Post Office or VTNZ, fill out the form, pay $8.80, and they give you a new Plate, Rego sticker and WOF on the spot.
And I to my motorcycle parked like the soul of the junkyard. Restored, a bicycle fleshed with power, and tore off. Up Highway 106 continually drunk on the wind in my mouth. Wringing the handlebar for speed, wild to be wreckage forever.

The knock is only there 3.5k - 4k when "moving" tried to replicate in the garage but no luck - I may have to find a quiet road - take the helmet off and see if I can track it down - the new doohickey - can you get these locally or will I have to stick a new Kwaka one on and then swap it out for an Eagle in the near future?

Oh by the way thanks for the thought on "keeping an eye out" - if you find it, goes without saying (although I am just about to say it) there will be some beers of choice winging their way to you

Between Woodman & me we should be able to sort you out a doo & torsion spring. I put an eagle mike one in mine & when I looked at the 08 model doo it looked pretty good. I prob wouldn't have'nt bothered getting one in if I'd seen it beforehand. I put a good eaglemike spring in though as the stock kawa ones are crap.

I got in a torsion spring for Woodman but he didn't put it in (don't ask him why)

It's not too hard to do with a manual. The only thing you will need is a rotor tool & puller ( I used Woodmans home made one).

Unfortunately I am not going to clarence, but if padmei is finished with them I can courier them to you, or give them to someone who is going to Clarence. PM me. The spring is the main issue, my doo was fine, and i have padmeis old one, which is fine too but it is a post 07 one and so is thicker so am not sure if it will fit. Like padders said though I can send you the left over bits and as long as you don't break the drill bit off in the case (very easy) the torsion spring one looks just the berries..

who from nelson is going to clarence??
