    after an afternoon together

she is just about a streetfighter.. will take some pics when I have time. All the front fairings are now off, including the mudguard (well, it was never on).

First, oil, battery and lights. Oil is fine, right between the two levels on the side. One of the cells in the battery needed topping up, so that was done. Lights, all working except the main headlight, so new bulb for that will be needed. Is it correct for the rear brake not to light up the back brake light?? I know the bulb is working, because it lights up when the front brake is pulled.

Starting it up, absolutely fine. Choke, Turn key, push button (blah blah, yes not a push start, and I love it) and she started right up. Dad said compression seems to be about right (with a rough check), and the dash lights all work...

Should see if it moves fine. Into first gear. Try to pull away, revs die, bike stalls. Huh? Try again and again. Same result. Well, something wrong in gearbox, also can't get second either.

Start to take it apart. Everything comes off. Found that I need a lot of screws for the fairings when they go back on.

Once everything is off, dad notices a cable and suspects he can make the bike move. Answer: We completely failed to comprehend that with the side stand down, it won't pull away. Before dad's time, and I don't know enough. Now bike moves, but still no second gear.

John: I think you hinted something about this at some point. Do you know what might be the problem??

So, all I need is a right indicator (left should be OK) and the front fairing (need headlight mounts) and a working gearbox it would seem...

Next weekend will probably be a trip to Mt Eden Motorcycles for a service. Although I can't get a bike off them, they can definitely have my servicing. If they want a bike like mine in their workshop

Havn't read the whole thread so this may have been suggested. Just do a streetfighter version and save money from the fairings. Also check trade me and Ebay for headlight. Found one for my virago on ebay today for about $30NZD including shipping when it would cost close to 4 or 5 hundred from the shop. Same thing with the indicators but you can get some generic ugly ones from some parts shops for like 15 bucks or summat. Anyway good luck with it.

What seems to be the problem when It hits second?

I saw the guy who sold it crusing around town on it, make sure you really kick it into gear when you try (dont be scared to hurt it!)...

If not then let your dad? take it for a boot around the block and try muscle it into second

When I rode it home I had alittle bit of trouble doing this, I suspect it may just be the gear leaver, As when I crashed I was in 3rd? or 4th? I cant remeber but I didnt think and tried to take off in 3rd and it got all upset with me, but then I clicked it down the gears and it was fine, I'm sure I ran the bike the entire way in second on the way home so it should be fine, when are you taking it to the mechanics? I am hoping my bike will be ready soon - then I could come sort out your problems or maybe someone else here maybe able to provide some assistance, IF there is a gearbox problem then get in contact with the seller, and if you cant tell me - I will go get him myself and make him do something about it!

Replacing gearboxes, is something that your dont want to do nor try do its not fun and its not cheap! all the cogs and crazyness

What would they look like? Would they look like my attached pic? and which shops?? I don't need a headlight, just the bulb, as it doesn't have park or low beam... It does have a very nice high beam (which my dad found out the hard way when I flicked it on )

It doesn't get that far. It's like kicking a brick wall... (except up) I might try emailing the seller and see what he thinks. Personally, my dad and I suspect we are simply missing something stupid.

Dad's busy all week (loading it into the back of a previa - but upright), so at the very earliest the weekend. If you would love to have a look for yourself, I don't mind holding off on the mechanics (duh! who wants to spend money) and using them as a last resort. The gear lever is bent, but it looks like a double bend (was bent in, so got bent out, now wavy)

If it did get to worst case scenario, then the mechanics could fix/replace gearbox. As a newbie, there is no way on earth I'll attempt that.

JSG has also offered to bring his ZZR round so I can compare and find differences. "Ooh, look mine has more damage here". but I'm not sure when/if he is free...
