    Scams

Have you, or anyone you know, been daft enough to fall for one of these scams?
Be honest, we won't laugh, much.

Some time ago I scambaited - that's someone who answers scam mail, wastes the scammer's time, gets them to do silly things, and tries to warn potential scam victims you come across (some of the activities of some scambaiters may be considered questionable, but I stopped a guy in Australia from mortgaging his house and sending A$25,000 to a scammer, so I'm not sorry about anything dubious that I may have done).

The most common scam we're likely to fall victim of here is the "overpayment scam". Here someone makes an offer for goods advertised on something like TradeMe, then sends a cheque for say 10 times the amount. They act surprised when you tell them, then ask that you send them the excess by Western Union. Weeks or months later the bank bounces the cheque, takes the money out of your account, which drops into negative because you've sent cash to the scammer.

Then there are the Nigerian Dictator's wife seeking to clear money from a secret bank account, etc, etc, etc.... If it's too god to be true, it isn't

Now I'm taking up motorcycling, I feel sorry for the Nigerian scammer that I convinced to ride his motorbike from Cotonou, Benin, to Lagos, Nigeria. He had to bribe border officials to get to Lagos to meet me and receive the money I was giving him for his church in Benin. He arrived in Lagos broke, and I wasn't there. Oh dear. Like hell I feel sorry for him.
