    New speed camera vans.

It appears as if we have additional vans on the roads. The Toyota Previa is in use & was announced publicly.
Hyundai vans are now in use. The model is the H1 and several of them have been sighted around the place. Close to Levin and also on the way to Whangarei.

Possibly cheaper than the Previa to purchase?

(Couldn't find any threads regarding these. Google is quiet as well)

Yep its the age old saying "Anything could be a cop"
I have seen a old mazda bongo on the motorway, camera in back, flash on towbar and ladder on roof. Bloody sneaky I thought.
Still its good they have raised their game - thrill of being hunted etc

No. They park on the side of the road with their camera in the back of the van. Pictures are taken by the camera of vehicles approaching from the rear, if you are exceeding the posted speed limit and this is detected with a small radar unit on the camera.

These "speed cameras" were introduced with a stated promise that they "would ONLY be used at accident black-spots" yet have now become a method of adding revenue to the gubbinment's coffers.

If it weren't bad enough that people are getting worse at driving, they constantly introduce more & more of these money making scam operatives & make the roads more dangerous than they already are and I'm really getting sick of it, they're constantly and actively endangering the lives & well-being of every New Zealander all in the name of money.

Any van parked on the side of the road I consider a potential camera van. I see the cops are parking on on ramps now to get you as you go past, must be a bad accident spot................

As I understand/understood ... speed camera vans aren't cop's. The work (for want of a better name) is contracted out.

I thought that they are employed by the police but are civilians, none sworn bods. (I could be wrong)

Whats worse - is that they are using Mr Whippy vans as camera vans.

Yeah - I know you think Im taking the piss (with a flake) - but its true. So next time you see a Mr Whippy van on the side of the road - remember you just dont know who is inside.

Police in New Zealand, frustrated by a rural "grapevine" that tips off drunken drivers whenever checkpoints are set up, are taking to the roads in ice cream vans playing Greensleeves.
The ruse was admitted yesterday by officers in the rolling countryside of the central North Island.
Senior Sergeant Nick Dobson said that the standard practice of using unmarked cars to catch offenders was no longer working because drivers recognised the models of the Holden or Ford vehicles that the police force used.
"It is pretty easy to tell what an undercover police car looks like," he said.
"If we have to be sneaky to catch these people then we will be.
"Anything could be a police patrol car. We could be in an ice cream truck. We're trying to get people to think a bit more, but I don't want to give away too much."

    This is old news.

The new vans have been around for months and are fitted with digital cameras of sufficient resolution that features of the driver are easily seen.
