Battery replacement query

Some little toe rag...possibly Grandson left ignition on on my 2008 Ultra, battery is completly stuffed and would not even jump start so have removed it and tomorrow will hopefully get anudder one.
Question, when I replace it does it require any resetting of stuff like alarm codes, radio etc

Have you tried recharging the battery?

+1 for a full recharge first!

If you bike is a 2008 unit then the chances are that it will take a full 14 hour recharge (check the manual) and be as right as rain.

If you do have to chage the battery, the onboard computer and all the gismos will reset themselves automatically. All you will have to do is to reset the clock time.

Thanks Yellow Dog and Virago, as I said the battery is stuffed.......had on charger for 24 hours and will not even show guages when bike is switched on and as I said will not even start with a jump off the car. Was hoping what YD said that all I will have to reset is the clock...fingers crossed.
Just been doing a bit of reading and apparrently if these sealed units are run completly flat for a long period they can "Freeze" so I am guessing that is the case here. I havn't ridden the big bitch for about 3 weeks.....have been playing with the Dyna instead...Thanks.
Now I just have to get a battery down to Taumarunui tomorrow as am off to the HOG Nationals on Tuesday......South Island....yeeeehaaaa

Don't give up on it quite yet. Was it actually charging on the charger?

Often when a battery is drained right down to 0 volts, it will require a sharp "kick" with higher than normal voltage to get it charging. Make sure that it's out of the bike when you do it...!

If your charger doen't have the necessary adjustment, take the battery to an auto electrician or bike shop.

It's worth a try before buying a new one.

Yep, I've done this too.

You just need make sure that the high voltage is a burst and not a charge.

They go pop after only a few seconds if you are not careful.

I must say it doesn't sound good though

Managed to get hold of Barry at Road and Sport today...Sunday...Great Service...he is sending another one down tomorrow. Apparrently when you reconnect the battery at any time you have to have the ignition on and that lets everything reset, if you do not do this all hell will break loose with your alarm...Good tip he gave me.
I was thinking of giving it to the Auto Sparky for the kick but do not want to be down South with a suspect battery...better safe than sorry....also way better than being broken down on the side of the road crying my eyes out....LOL

Since your ride is sitting unused for periods also invest in a battery tender that you wire into the battery (mine has a connection permanently wired to the battery that I just plug into when required) - they are a bit of coin to start with ($80 -$140 depending on the brand, check trademe too) but if the bike is sitting they will keep the battery charged and it will last considerably longer.

You can keep them plugged in for extended periods when the bike is not in use - ie say your rego is on hold for 3-4 months over winter.

This type of thing - but as I say shop around.

Never put rego on hold, winter is great riding, beats melted tar any day. Normally get out for regular rides but business has been nuts lately. Keep the weather nice in the South for all us HD riders heading to your fair city next weekend

Good you went to barry as this means you will be sent the harley AGM battery which is one of the best batteries made ,expensive but the best

Yep, the battery cost $300 but price is never an issue, do it once do it right is the best mto, short cuts create heart ache and in my experience more cost. Talked to many at the Nationals and most agreed that the HD battery, especially since it is for the Ultra with all the extra electric gismo's on her, is a better long term option than say the Yuasa. Got the usual rain on the West Coast but the rest of the trip was sunny, home for a rest now. Thanks for your input.
