I've never been in that situation (thank God/Rossi), but "putting a bike down" always strikes me as being a little dumb.

For a start it takes time to make the decision and then put the bike down, and surely you're better off spending that reaction and braking time finding an escape route or losing speed because a bike sliding on it's side doesn't slow down anywhere near as well as one on it's tyres. Second the moment you put your bike down, you've had an accident, and they really suck and finally if a car pulls out in front of you I have always planned to jump up at the last moment, theory being I'll clear the handlebars and hopefully fly over the car.
Don't blame me, I voted Green.

It happened to me years ago on a CBX1K, but there was zero time to avoid as I was looking over my shoulder at the time, I went over the roof (no idea how that happened) the bike ended up embedded in the car. So next question.. If you know its gonna happen, put it down or take the hit and go over the bonnet? Bit subjective I know.

Myth #8. Apparently 'putting it down' is nearly always the wrong move.

thats pretty much what i did. i can remember thinking "on impact, jump!" i didnt have time to brake or find a way out due to the traffic volume, plus my own inexperience wouldnt have helped. i didnt come out unharmed, but i came out alive, and i walked away from where i landed to the footpath. was lucky that i landed in my lane, instead of the opposing one, cos i probably would have been run over as well.

Well done mate, glad it worked cos thats what Ill be attempting if it ever happens. (the jumping bit, not the getting run over bit).

heres hoping itll never happen. if it does, try and keep your eyes open. i wouldnt remember a thing otherwise. also relax as much as possible. i remember hitting the ground and rolling, but i dont remember the impact of it, or any pain i should have felt. this is gonna sound silly, but maybe roll down a few big hills. i spent most of my childhood doing that, and i think that contributed to my lack of injuries. i wish i could see a video of what happened, cos the memory is getting foggy already. lol.

it happens to me alot. people waiting at intersection to turn left and merge in. just sitting there looking at me approaching. just as im comming upto them they start to turn.

what the hell? sit there and turn just when im there? sounds like something you would do to take someone out on purpose.

next worst thing that happens is when someone in the lane next to you decides to come into your lane. and as much as you are sounding the horn they just insist on trying to ram you. bloody idiots.

and whoever said try not to ride directly next to another vehicle was absolutely correct.

yep, i got 2 other pieces of advice from mates:
    1) always try and ride a little (slightly guys) faster than the cages on the road so you are not mingled in with them.
    2) assume that everyone is going to cut you off and that no one can see you.

What a bunch of wankers you lot are.
Hope the guy is ok. Move along the rest of you.
The only facts are this: car didn't stop, bike didn't stop. Collision occurred and someone got hurt.
Who's fault it is, is irrelevant at this point.
Fight ACC on their turf not on ours.
FFS why even bother riding if all your going to do is argue every-time a biker goes down.
People will crash regardless of what you will say or do.
