It means it's a matter between you and the Police and not between you and a WoF inspector....

So instead of being run off the road by some fuckhead yakking on a cellphone or texting his mates, we'll be nailed by fuckheads trying to work out where "Victoria Street" is on the map.

That'd be "Careless driving" (used to be "driving without due care and attention"?). Same offense as driving while concentrating on opening a Coke bottle, or driving while putting on makeups.

I think the law is already in place for such things. It is only a matter of whether people are mature enough to act responsibly or not.
No matter what the government set on the WoF regulations, there would always be an idiot driving badly.
People should be responsible for their own action, not simply relying on the government to make 100 volumes of Law guidebooks.

B'sides, GPS system should be better than map that requires you to flip through manually (which some people do while driving)?

Hmmm, that'd be a great comfort to my widow and two sons...

Unfortunately, most drivers seem incapable of behaving responsibly - there are those who can't even adjust a modern car radio without taking their eyes from the road long enough to cross the centreline and wipe out a bike.

What part of which driving test determines that a driver is capable of consulting GPS or reading the latest text from JokeLine without causing an accident? There are a lot of people out there for whom a quich glance in the mirrors and a speed check is a serious test of their driving "abilities", and they want to pass a law allowing them to consult a map?

    Our car

This rule is due for an overhaul soon as GPS with maps becomes commonplace, some of these Jap Imports have Japanese street maps on the monitor.[/QUOTE]

Our car does ...its an Elysion ..and the console next to the driver has the built in navi unit just type in the phone number of where u want ...and a voice will direct you and a 3d map you can watch ..though I use the 2 d ,,one down to 5 meters
It also has tv and DVD functions , but only when the park brake is applied ( though other cars can be viewed when driving dont lnow why ,,,,

Also it can take a pc cars that holds memory sticks and I can put a lot of music on those as well as movies

Finally they installed a decent set of speakers ..no distortion an mind melting levels ....

I wondered about nz laws when I first saw this thing

If it's not illegal, it should be. Children who require this level of in-car entertainment should be dragged astern. Behind their overindulgent parents.

    None.

I am tempted to talk a long writeup about lack of common sense in a lot of people, but I decided against it as my fingers are aching from this winter cold (is it winter yet?).

Besides, it wouldn't change the situation much just by ranting in here. The only thing we can do is be more vigilant. Riding would become more interesting anyway, and I would enjoy the feeling of being alive everytime I get to park my bike at home without incident.

The more mature you are, the less you let things upset you...I am just trying to get to that level.

.....and fed on bread and water and sent to work down the coal mines, only be allowed to play with sticks and thrashed within an inch of their lives should they fail to learn the lord prayer, backwards, in Latin. You cantankerous sod.

I'd rather concentrate on driving on the long trips, as oppossed to have bored kids, screaming, squabbling, and repeating every 10K's, "Are we there yet?".

I can recite the Lord's Prayer backwards , in Latin.

It is an accomplishment , acquired at a younger and more gullible age, for which I have found little practical application.

And, unfortunately, no, it does not summon up a demon obliged to grant your wishes. More false advertising dammit.
