You do need some basic legislation in place to protect everyone else.

Helmets and speed limits are a good examples.

I think you have completely missed the point.

This assumes thats its OK to stop someone doing something, for their own good, even if they really want to do it, and it will have no effect on you.

You are arguing that its OK to stop someone riding without a helmet as we know they are 1.3 times safer when they wear one.

Id suggest that I could make you 35 times safer by stopping you riding full stop.

In fact, just by banning motorcycles, I could make a massive overnight reduction in the road toll.

Just by reducing the maximum engine capacity to 125 cc I could make massive reductions in the road toll, without affecting your ability to get to work on a motorcycle !. (You do really own your bike for transport, not recreation ?)

Be careful what authority you wish to bless your transport angels with.. they might like it more than you imagine.

I think you have blown my point out of all proportions.

But I do also understand your point.

Education to help you make the right decsiion has to be better than big brother controlling you.

With appleogies to David, I believe the point was his insistence that the decision was not so much correct or otherwise, It's the point that it's his, not anyone else’s.

The fact that some arbitrary associated costs have been levied upon the combined plebdum in no way removes his right to that decision.

PS: I also object to the notion that I can be "educated" into making a decision which might fit the public purse better. If I wanted edumicating I know where to get the services required myself, ones unadulterated by nonsensical ideology.

PPS: in order to demonstrate the point I'm off for a wee sojurne without benefit of my dayglo skivy, and if I should come across any cones I'm going to burn the fucking things.

    Later...
Go soothingly on the grease mud, as there lurks the skid demon

Just to clarify. I'm not an advocate of laws to 'make' people do things. Minimal laws and maximum education and information.

People do stupid things everyday, i will put my hand up here and say 'me too'. In many areas of life, not just riding. There is always a consequence to any action, if an individual can live with the consequence then all well and good. But if the consequence of your choice impinges on me who did not make that choice, then I retain my right to get angry with you.

While I agree with your post overall, I'd really like to know what stupid things you do every day...

Since Ratti seems to live in Lower Hutt, I suspect she at least was not the biker I was writing about

A lot of people seem to like using the F word on this thread, I suspect no matter how bad the rider I saw on Friday rode, they would justify it to themselves just so they could use the F word on KB. Sometime I thing keyboards should have 2 F keys, it would save them so much time having to think about typing a proper thoughtful response.
Please Mr ACC, my 1300cc bike was passed by a 400cc bike on a track day, can I have my fees reduced ?

Definatly was not me you saw Sweety.
    ATGATT, thats Ratti.

As for what stupid things do I do everyday..yes Ed. *sigh* You're just being picky about the semantics-again. Fair enough, I accept I made an untidy sentance.
I choose to do stupid things, but not every day. Every day there are people choosing to do stupid things.
    Is that better?

    Who goes 100kph max?
Who had a headlight on before it was mandatory?
Who would bother to keep their bike at WoF level if there was no WoF?
Who wouldn't wear a helmet if it wasn't law to do so?

I bet everyone will find a reason not to do at least one of the above at some time and jump on a soapbox giving that reason.
Mostly the first I imagine but others will have different opinions based on their flavour if riding.
Unfortunately ACC puts us all in one little box as a co dependant community what you do affects me and what I do affects you...directly!

What a bunch if individuals to do that to... aye?

    I like what Spearfish said.

    To counter;
    Death and taxes.
I'm far more out of shape about the cost of junkies, dole bludgers, government waste, and about 30 other social evils - before what 'might' happen to someone else on a bike and their gear choices.

Almost worth jumping on a surfing forum and suggesting mandatory anti-shark suits and lifejackets.
