When a runner isn't the only option...

Those who know me know that my first response to seeing the 5-0 is to drop two gears, THEN analyse the pros vs cons...

Well this morning on the way to work, gave it a wind up off the lights to hunt down some boyracer for a laugh (I highly recommend it - who woulda thought their turbo 4WD rice-rocket wasn't the fastest thing on the road?). After my ego was manicured ready for another day at work, I caught up to some traffic and dropped down to do some lane-splitting at a more sedate pace.

Had to drop something off in Maungaraki, so stopped at the lights. I hear sirens. Hmm.... look at the clear road ahead of me, look at the hill on my right, but think of my dissatisfaction with my current tyres, my sore wrist, I'm still half-asleep, I don't wanna be late for work while storming down some back road... okay, time to take it like a man and get ready for a rodgering.

The two uniformed cars come screaming up the inside of me, one pulls directly across in front of me, blocking my exit and stops, while the other stops right beside me. This is gonna be expensive I think.

Then the traffic coming the other way stops, the cops shoot across the motorway and up Maungaraki Hill... OMG - so it wasn't me?!!!

Bet you're glad you didn't do anything silly like making them chase you at high speeds for no reason?

Good fortune to you! If only it held out all the time

The "joys" of a guilty conscience.

It's kinda fun spotting Catholics on the road - easy to spot: You're in the midst of a line of vehicles all cruising along at 100kph on the open road, you round a corner, see the cop or camera car parked on the side of the road and suddenly a couple of the cars in front of you plow on the brakes and drive past the cop at 75kph. Obviously those are the Catholics. They're so convinced, at a basic level, that they're guilty of something that the merest hint of authority provokes strange reactions.

Yeah those Opus Dei can be quite pious! But don't sweat it, you won't be the first to feel the flames you can thank the Reformation for that

I had a moment like that last year - overtook a car coming up to a corner and as I passed it, a cop came around the corner and flashed his lights at me. It was on a windy road near Tokamaru and there was nowhere to pull over, so I just kept going. I saw in my mirror that he had braked but he had cars behind him and I knew he wouldn't be able to turn around safely for about 3kms so I figured if I saw flashing lights coming up behind me, THEN I'd stop! Never saw them, but all the way to Palmerston North I expected them and I felt very nervous every time I saw a cop that day! Never heard anything more about it so he obviously didn't clock my rego.

By the same token, I WASN'T feeling guilty when a cop car came up behind me in Wellington a few years ago with its lights and siren going. I indicated and pulled over to let it pass and it stopped behind ME and the cop got out! Result? A ticket for going through an ORANGE light about 500m earlier, and despite disputing it and taking it to court, I lost a morning's pay, $135 (the JP hearing the case cut the fine but still believed them!) and gained 35 demerit points. So if you're ever behind me, THAT'S why I stop for orange lights! Telling the cops that the road code says to stop if you can do so safely or proceed through the orange light scored me no brownie points at all.

I have wondered a few times, where they draw the line at safe.
I usually stop for orange lights.

I figured safe was if you stopped behind the lines of the intersection - I went through because there was a guy right up my date. He braked when he saw the cop (who was waiting at the lights of a side road) - and ended up 10 feet INTO the intersection - not exactly what I would call safe but he didn't get the ticket, I did! If I hadn't gone through, it's likely he would have smashed into the back of my car. At least then it wouldn't have been my fault!

What annoyed me most is that I DO NOT run red lights and I nearly always stop on orange unless they change as you enter the intersection. In fact I had been writing letters to the Wellington police asking them to install a red-light camera at the Haywards Hill intersection as you took your life into your own hands if you decided to go as soon as the lights turned green. But of course, all that information was 'irrelevant to the case" and I wasn't allowed to even mention it! It wasn't any consolation to find the cop who gave me the ticket was even hated by cops as he regularly gave them tickets! And a few months later the bastard got a Queens Service Medal and I had to take his bloody photograph! Arsehole!

Rubbish, we feel guilty while we're doing it, but keep on doing it and console ourselves that we'll be forgiven on Sunday. At least, I used to, now I don't give a fat rats botty.
