Further frustration for Coppins in Latvia:

This past weekend saw Josh Coppins and his fellow MX1 GP stars head to Kegums in Latvia for rounds 9 of the World Championship. Dry plus hot conditions greeted the riders and as the racing progressed the circuit became very challenging for all.

In the first MX1 moto Coppins pulled a decent start, rounding the opening lap inside the top 15. Feeling good on the bike Coppins battled it out with Goncalves, Swanepoel and Strijbos, ultimately finishing the 35 minute and 2 lap moto in 14th position.

The second moto would see another solid start for the number 6 Aprilia, as Coppins quickly settled into a good rhythm. Mid way through, whilst battling with Strijbos, the chain came off the bike putting an end to the race for the frustrated New Zealander.

Josh gave his thoughts on the weekend:”The track was really good this weekend, very rough and bumpy but I enjoyed it and felt comfortable with the bike in the first race. The second moto was pretty frustrating though, I was having a decent race when the chain came off."

The MX1 World Championship now heads to Sweden for Round 10 in Uddevalla next weekend.

    Press release:

    Coppins enjoys Swedish MX GP.

Factory Aprilia racer, Josh Coppins, has scored two positive results in front of 22.000 enthusiastic spectators at round 10 of the FIM MX World championship. The Uddevalla circuit set at the foot of a picturesque rock face enables spectators prime viewing of the technical circuit.

Coppins qualified in 12th during the Saturday 20 minute moto. As the gate dropped for moto 1 Coppins did not get the jump he expected and was back in the pack left with loads of work. He put his head down and climbed the ladder to finish 11th coming from outside the top 20 at the start of the moto.

A better start in the second moto saw Coppins up in the top ten. He seemed to have 9th spot secured until a fuel pump glich lost him valuable time and he had to relinquish two positions.

“I’m pretty pleased with the day” explained Coppins. “My riding was good in both motos and I enjoyed racing in these conditions. The circuit was quite tricky after the morning rain and it was difficult to get grip and drive in most places. I love racing in front of the Swedish fans as they are really passionate about MX. I have some good memories from Uddevalla” explained Coppins.

Coppins shows heart in grueling Limburg GP.

Round 11 of the FIM MX World championship has welcomed 23.500 spectators to the grueling sands of Lommel to witness possibly the toughest Motocross GP in the world. Factory Aprilia racer, Josh Coppins, gave fans their monies worth to post his best 2010 GP result to date, but it was how the New Zealander did it that was most impressive.

Moto 1 did not start off well for Coppins as he lost his rhythm in the opening stages and forfeited his advantage of a top ten start, regressing down to 15th spot. Once settled into position, ‘The Lizzard’ turned up the gas and started to make his way through the pack. He progressed into 10th after passing Belgian Kevin Strijbos with 5 minutes to go and crossed the finish line in 9th after Tanel Leok ran out of fuel on the last lap.

Coppins fans were shocked to see the number 6 Aprilia in stone last as he went down on the first lap after been hit from behind in the second turn. The resilient Kiwi was not about to give up just yet as remounted with a damages rear brake, took the bit between his teeth and charged through the pack. Within 5 laps Coppins caught and disposed of half the field and then set his sights on the top 10. He caught and passed, Guarneri ,Strijbos, Ramon, Barragan, Swanepoel and Bobryshev in the last five laps to cross the finish line 8th for an amazing comeback ride.

“This weekend we proved that the Aprilia has the reliability to withstand the toughest conditions as well as be competitive in the sand. I took too long to get going in the first moto and should have been more aggressive but once I found my rythym I put in some strong laps but ran out of time to make a move on Swanepoel and Dedycker. I had no rear brake after my crash in the second moto which actually helped me to ride smooth and keep my speed and try to flow in the corners. The tighter turns were a little more difficult but once I figured them out I found some good lines and was amazed at how fast I reeled the guys in. I made two awesome passes on the last lap to finish 8th so I’m really happy with this result. This gives me a lot of motivation for the next GP’s, especially Lierop.”

Coppins heads to Loket in the Czech Republic for round 12 of 15 next weekend

Coppins posts another top 10 GP result

A muddy Czech MX GP has seen factory Aprilia racer, Josh Coppins, post another top 10 result in front of 21.000 motocross mad spectators in Loket this weekend.

Heavy rainfall prior to the event forced organizers to cancel the Saturday qualification race to preserve track conditions which left Coppins with 18th position in the timed practice.

With track conditions drying somewhat but leaving a one-lined circuit, Coppins knew that a good start would be important for the first moto. Getting good drive out the gate he was positioned well but then a small mistake on one of the steep uphill climbs lost Coppins some valuable positions. He battled to make further progress from thereon in and had to settle for 13th position.

Another good start had Coppins in 8th on the first lap. He battled with Maxi Nagl and Ken De Dycker before losing touch. He managed to conjure up a fighting spirit towards the end of the moto when David Philippaerts was making his way through the pack from a crash. Coppins held off the Italian for many laps before crossing the line in 10th for 10th overall.

“It was actually a very tough weekend,” admitted Coppins. “We battled with bike set up due to the different conditions but as the weekend went on the team kept on improving the bike. I did not ride well in the first moto and battled to find my rhythm but I was much happier with moto 2 where I got to battle with David Philippaerts for a long time. I am looking forward to Brazil and then Lierop. I am really motivated to put in a good result.”
