By the time you landed one here it would probably be closer to $10k with freight and GST. Still, add in a brand new 690, you're looking circa $25k, but that would kick the butt of most similar options in that price bracket (F800GS\A types). Huge weight savings for starters.
On re-reading the parts that you get for the full kit...it seems that they have completely new rear fuel cell being 16l as opposed to 12 with standard. so getting 4 extra litres without any major impact to the bike might be a good idea. Rally Raid's bolt on rear tank with adapters and stuff works out to be around $700 but this version seems better.
...back in the saddle, and getting a little!
Dunno about that. That low slung & exposed exhaust looks like shit to me. Nylon tanks are good though, the 640 has that & it's bloody tough. As noted, way more gas than is needed for NZ.
I quite like the new rallye raid EVO2 kits, if (when) I had a 690 I'd go that way, & probably make up a tool kit module to take the place of one of the tanks for everyday use in NZ. 300k range is all ya need really.
Cheers
Clint
If I ever own another 690 the evo 2 tanks would probably be the way I'd go although I have some reservations as to their crashability compared to the safari.....they certainly look way cooler though

That's a lot of $ just to look cool and have a bit more range (and make it heavy). You could put another bike in the shed for that. I'd be wanting at least another cylinder and 20 extra horsepower for that money.
But that's just me, I'm tight...
You don’t have to use the whole lot, all at once...

Well my gosh you have opened up a can of Orange and Red worms, don't envy you at all
I'm gunna say it will have to be horses for courses, what are you really going use your new stead for the most
Brief thoughts
690 well you know but said by many to be best al round ADV bike made
500, just plain cool, 170kph dirt bike with lights
Freeeride, steedy as she goes anywhere but not very fast or for long
Husky, good Price, heavier than the rest but if that doesn't matter to much. bonzer
Might bump this into the right place for the long term report
I've managed to challenge myself on every bike I've owned.and I've never owned a bike that I can go anywhere easily on - but I think that says more about my limitations as a rider than any limitations the bike has.
Daydreaming about my next bike does however relieve the boredom of waiting for my next doctors, orthopaedic surgeons, physio, concussion clinic and ACC appointments so is quite therapeutic - but I don't tell any of them that cos my head has had all the bashing it can handle for now
One problem I have with choosing a bike is I've been too spoilt with the handling and power of the 690, lets call it the 690 curse. There are loads of very capable older bikes out there for way cheaper but I'm a bit anxious that I might get frustrated with them soon after purchase - like my trusty old DR. Great bike but ummm well errr you know.
The search continues........
