Be surprised if they repair it - when i worked at a stealer in the UK it wouldnt take much to write a bike off, here with the price of KTM parts and the biff the bike got it surely must be a write off. If they do decide to repair it get them to confirm they are using all new parts as there is a worrying trend on the car insurance side of using used parts to keep the cost down.

The insurance company have sent one assessor to look at the bike - we were going to send it to AFC in Palmy for a repair price but they are now sending another bloke to look at it as they don't think it is worth fixing as the frame looks like its bent. I found two dents in the space frame either side of the triple clamps which looks like the forks have slammed into and I reckon the front end has moved 15mm back towards the engine. A real shame as apart from that there's probably only $4K of cosmetic damage.

All 690s have dimples in the frame bottom rail 80mms back from the headstock both sides - the steering stops will tell you how much force went into the frame.

I know the guys at AFC pretty well and trust they will take care of me. I don't imagine there will be that many 690's around for parts scavenging in anycase. They told me they never take chances with frames on motorbikes when assessing them for insurance as the risk is too great. Any doubt they price a new frame which in most cases means a new bike. I'm not holding my breath it will be repaired - but not totally discounting it either.

we suspected that but one dent is 3 times the size of other and has a silver vertical line through the middle of it so certainly looks like a triple clamp has hit it. The stops look ok though so who knows?

The front guard has been pushed up against the radiator shroud and the rally fairing is sitting 25mm out of line with the tank so either the tank has moved or it has. There are no cracks or scratches in the fairing so it looks like it has not be wacked - unlike the safari tank which has a lot of deep road-rashing. Once its in pieces it should be easy check. I would have stripped it myself by now to measure it but cant work one handed darn it

visited the accident scene for the first time today. Didn't jog my memory of the crash but man O man I couldn't believe the length of first impact to where I was found under the bike...easily 100m. Had a mate with me who saw it the day after the crash and said the sheep gizzards were splattered on the road for the full 100m. The cops marked both ends with paint which is still on the road.

We found some broken bits of the helmet and some bits from the gopro about 30m from where I ended up so our guess is I must have been upright with the sheep stuck between the engine and front wheel for 70 odd meters then I hit the deck and slid for another 30m. The sheep was found in two halves and looks to have been sawn in 2 by the front tire (MT21)- surreal feeling looking at the site I have to say!

Yep know that feeling, takes awhile but eventually it fades mostly. Saw couple of marks on road when passing other week but not much else as didn't stop there.

just goes to show how important good gear is to have on the body...nobody really wants to find out how good, but am pleased that you did better than the sheep. You mention in a previous post about body armour, and this was one of the reasons why I bought the Klim badlands pro jacket. It is one of the few around that comes with all the armour in it i.e. elbows, shoulders, back and chest. Most jackets have shoulder and elbow, then the next step up, have quality back protecters..but it seems that very few have the chest plate. I opted to get one that has it in all the time, as this way it ensures that you have it with you and all times.

I happened to be San Fran awhile back so I visited KTM Twins, and had them already buy one in for me, so I carried that back as luggage. I then purchased online from them the matching pants, and got that shipped.

The jacket is pretty darn good. The pants, are probably too big for me, as I slip around inside them...but I jsut realised that they don't have any decent belt/waist setup so I just ordered the Klim suspenders to keep them up.

Expensive stuff though but about the same as all the top end Alpine stars...ie $1200 JAcket, $800 pants. In saying that, tramping/hiking goretex jackets can be $800 anyway...so it's just the price.

My brake lever took a blow crossing a ford last week and bent it almost into the casing...made of chocolate it is...any sort of protection available or home made fix to protect it a bit better?...maybe an extension on my bash plate maybe?...

I was confused for a sec regarding the brake lever as I was thinking it was your front lever, but the reference to your bash plate infers rear brake pedal -yes?. I've also noodled the brake pedal on a adventure ride and had to use small vice grips for the remaining trip...which actually worked pretty well compared to no lever/brake.

As an option, I considered getting one of the rally raid billet replacements but the cheap option was to make a 'brake snake' which is a simple bit of wire tying the pedal to the bash plate. This means that any load on the pedal gets transferred to the wire/bashplate. They work real good.

do a google search for images, brake snake 690...and you will see wha they are. I made my one...

For the seat, I bought a KTM gel set...but sheesh...its still quite thin - I actually thought I had bought the wrong on but am stuck with it. I've done 300K rides on that seat so its fine.

BUT,,,For truly long boring rides on the tarmac, I use one of the Airhawk seat custions that I simply clip on when required...and then once into the real ride, I take it off due to it being inflatable etc

Rally Raid makes a billet rear break leaver for the 690 which is a big improvement on the stock jobby but costs 144 quid so it aint a cheap option.

Yeah the billet brake pedal is expensive so I ll leave that for now but will buy the fuel filler billet to stop shit getting into the tank...there are touratech engine guards that cover the brake lever and the side casing ...not too dear either...
