Get an old airhead. Then you can spend all of your money & what should be riding time planning your next set of ugrades.. Oh, & it helps with the injury count too...

Hey Marty, good to see that you are still dreaming/wishing/pining for the 690.
I to think about the next bike, and interestingly though, also thought the exc500...as its the lighter, capable version of the 690 but...it's still not the complete package of the 690 ie oil range, tank range, 12V power, headlight power, subframe for carrying shit. The only answer is both!...the 690, when we you really need to go on an adventure...and the 500 for when you need a dual sport bike with lights.
Festy finally traded the Aprilia 550 in, while a very cool machine, couldn't beat my 690...and came with more issues that it was worth, so he went back to the new WR450. If I never had had a 690, I would have bought the WR, clearly they are very capable dirt bike, and good enough on the road to qualify for an adventure machine. Lighter is always good, and WR have a lot going for them. Yet, we swapped bikes for a while, and unless I was on a hard core single track, I'd rather ride my 690.
And speaking of riding the 690 on a real adventure...I might go for the full bling of my 690 and put the rally raid kit on it because I've just got approval from the wife to ride the Transamerica Trail next year, and am starting to work through the logistics for that adventure. I really want to ride my bike with the RR kit on, as I think it will be the ideal machine for the 8000k adventure....but have to work through the hassle of ship vs buy....and then buying has all the problems that you have of what to get!!!...hmmm

The TAT is on my bucket list to do one day, I've even got the tee shirt and a sticker for my next bikeIf I win lotto and get over my on going concussion symptoms (shout out to Kieran Read!) before ya go I'd gladly tag along as a wing man
Wrote to CCM about importing the GP450 adventure and got a reply today. They said they have no dealers in NZ but have had several enquiries about it. They would be happy to export a bike to me so will explore the costs for this, its an awesome package. I think it may work out to be too expensive but will be interesting exercise in any case.

Thanks, yes TAT is a must. As part of the planning...I'm currently talking ol Festy into coming along as he bypassed the family/kids thing so only needs to convince himself, he has the bucks and potentially the time. I'm hoping he can, but otherwise...I'll plan for a solo, but am sure I'll find others.
Those bikes absoltuely look interesting, I like that you can get a plug in power upgrade kit to raise it from 40hp to 50hp, 18l, and other bits optimised for adventuring. I personally would have to ride and see one before forking out GBP$8000 plus frieght and stuff. IF you think about it though...buying a 690 or 500 exc would still require several thousand more to make adventure worthy...so maybe a good option.
I wonder if the cut you a deal to get a model down here as a promo/demo?

I can see why you miss your 690. Recently replaced my 450 with an 08 690. Absolutely love it. Much better fit for a tall chap like me (tho needs bar risers) and comfy on the road sections too. My Tiger will now be relegated unless I'm two up.

Congratz on the new purchase CC. The 690 really is as close to a do it all bike as you can get IMHO and that engine is simply the business! I fitted 30mm risers on mine and it was perfect for me (I'm 6' 1&1/2"), and there's plenty of slack in the cables probably even for 2inch risers. you'll have a blast on it, just keep the oil changes regular (5K) and check the valves once a year and she'll just keep chugging along!

I recently replaced my rox anti-vibe risers (which I liked) with a different riser setup, due to installing a scott steering damper. I have the risers sitting in my spare parts area...so if you were thinking of going that way, I don't mind selling them at a huge profit, with GST, Duty, freight, cleaning fee's, packaging, walking time to post office, coffee costs and incidentals...

Anyone know who can re map a 690 .?.....
KTM dealers carry the Acro map so should be able to change the stock one no problem - Patterson O'Conner did mine free of charge. Some guys have made there own but you need to have a few clues to do that (more than I've got)
This thread on ADVRider.com was pretty informative on the subject.

I had the guys at TSS red baron here in lower hutt change the maps when I put my leo vince muffler on (akro map). I don't think that its a particular hard job, as I personally wanted to have a shop to change the mapping just in case something got truly cocked up...as then it would be there problem to fix, but that was years ago and I'm getting a little braver.
Since then, I've bothered to buy a data interface cable and installed Tuneboy on my small PC to learn a little about the maps (there is two files/maps for a remap). What was good was that I could absolutely confirm that the correct maps were there (so the shop did it right)...and it also gave me access to the error logs etc stored in the bike. having this simple access to the bikes brains means I'll know that I can check the status of the machine (kinda cool...and is all part of the TAT planning).
I'm not brave enough yet though to swap them for anything else as they are the right ones, but just letting you know this is another avenue for the modaholics.
What are you needing done specifically?

Just an FYI, I remembered I had issues with Tuneboy and my KTM... http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/sh...eboy-Take-Care
Just a heads up, no idea if it will be relevant for you.
