    I've been demoted.

So, I'm an expat, and have been driving on an overseas license since I've been here. All perfectly legal, 12 months of driving from your latest entry. So a vacation every year and that's all sorted.

Just went and did the class 6 theory test, and am now the proud owner of a 6L. Woot. Except it apparently invalidates my current overseas license and I can no longer ride my bike, no go over 70, nor ride between 10 and 5. Until I pass the practical (which thankfully is booked in a week).

Is that normal ? And does someone have a decent 250 I can borrow in town (Wellington) for the practical ? I'll trade the husky !

woot, my BGAB still has a valid WoF, I'll just use that.

Where is your full license from? At least they don't destroy your original license here in NZ, like they do in Aus (NSW at least)...

I have two licenses, though one is now too long expired to convert (Canada) and one is still valid (Fiji). The Canadian one would let me convert with just a theory test, but the Canadian licensing guys are assholes and won't send me a new license while I'm overseas.

That's how things work in NZ. When I converted my car license a few years back, as soon as I did the theory, they told me I was under the L restrictions until the practical test and I would have to be accompanied by a full nz license owner to the practical or I would be disqualified on the spot.

I did take somebody to the test but before the test I continued driving with my overseas license. Thankfully I didn't get stopped but if I would have, I would have only shown the overseas one and even give a different address than the one the temporary NZ was registered to - there would have been no way for them to match the the two licenses and figure out it's the same person

I've still got a current NZ licence and a W.A. one. They didn't mention anything about destroying my NZ licence in W.A.

In NSW they sight the original and punch a few holes in to mark the original NZ license invalid. Bastards. I don't understand why the can't record the NZ license and link it to the Aus one, as it seems NZ does (in reverse) here.
