At least that's now the rule in Australia, and so it should be. And about bloody time...Why should the mighty 250 two stroke class be penalised because they make too much power against the heavy and comparitively ( Politically Correct and gutless ) 250 Fstrokes ? This should be happening here too.....

man those aussies are slow, they have been racing like that in nz for 3 years,

and good to see DK signed up to race a 250 2t over there as well,

infact a good amount of kiwi's signed up to race, 5 under 19's and a couple in MX2

hmmm, seems like somewhere in the last decade a class has been lost dunnit, theres now no bikes with comparable power to the 125cc two strokes, perhaps this leaves the door open for another class, 150cc 4T or 150cc 2T?

and there is one in the US amatuer ranks as well,

before everyone gets on the who killed the 2 t band wagon, the truth is more people buy 4 strokes, thats why all but one japanese manufacturer has stopped productions of them

so are there 125, 250, and 450 classes in NZ? forgive my ignorance I've been away from the racing scene a while. And 2T aint dead, its just getting selective with the owners

some of the reasons behind this are:
the reputation the likes of the XR's built for 4 stroke reliability (to the uninformed buyers)
4 strokes are cool at the moment, just like 15 years ago nobody would buy a 4 stroke because they were un-cool
4 strokes are currently regarded as most as 'the direction things are headed'


and a thing you will see across the country is that a lot of the better (but not pro) riders ride 2 strokes compared to those lower in the ranks

yes there are 3 national classes in NZ, 125's, MX2 (250's) and MX1 (over 251cc)

Hang on, I get from the thread that you can now race a 250 2t in the class with 250 4t's, not a seperate class as it is here now. If so it should make for interesting racing.

As Scott said, it's been like this for three years now. I ride my 250 2 stroke in the MX2 class and have done for literally years.


There are only a few of us racing at a higher level now, I was one of three 250 2 strokes at this years Auckland and Valley Champs racing in the MX2 class

I dont follow the MX very closley, so obviously they arent at a huge advantage, i.e, they dont dominate the front of the pack.

There was an article in ADB magazine a few months back, and they compared a 250f with a 144 and a 250 2T. All the bikes had similar lap times with a range of riders, the 250 2T made heaps more power and torque ( they dynoed the bikes ) but wasn't quicker than any of the other 2 bikes.

in the states they have 2 stroke nats pro and am class.. carmichael won last year on rm250

this depends on the track. down here we race classes based on ability / speed, you can ride whatever you like- some of the guys ride 250f's in the a grade and do ok on tighter tracks, but as soon as you get to a faster more high speed track they get destroyed. most likely due to their lack of acceleration in 4th and 5th gears, at the end of the day the 250 2t is a faster bike... but its not often relevant on a mx track, and often the more power does more harm than good as it makes the rider tired faster and more likely to feed it just that little bit too much in a corner, tight corners on 125s and 250f's is easy compared to a more powerful bike, all you have to do is lean it over and feed it to it!

Point taken but, do the spectators wanna watch the easier bikes to ride or, the faster bikes ie the 250 T's...and where does that leave the 450's now vs the 250 t's ? And, are you allowed to race a 500 with the 450's here? I've been out of the loop as well for a while .......
