KTM confusion

Hi im looking at getting a what we used to call "a trail" bike somthing i can ride on the road and off road like the xr's and tt's,Had a bit of a look around and xr's seem to be a thing of the past as do tt's I had a few ktm's years ago so started looking at the 500 plus cc range on trademe What i would like to know is what models need top end rebuild every few hundred hours like i have heard some of the newer thumpers need the as there are ecxc's sxc's lc4's and so on that are regod for road use

LC4's are not so maintenance intensive as they carry a decent amount of oil (I think Clint's got about 70,000km on his LC4e), however they are big.
Depending on what sort of riding you do, they may be a bit of a handful.

EXC's are much better for trail riding, but probably require as much looking after as their Jap counterparts

EXCs are the road-legal enduros, oil change interval 1500km, very similar service schedules to the jap equivalents. The 4Ts recently used the RFS engine (racing four stroke). There's as many tales of woe about modern 4Ts as there are fellahs that have raced them ignoring by 3x the schedule top-end/piston replacement intervals with no problems.

The LC4s are much more trail bikes than enduros. Oil change interval 5000km. The LC4 engine is much more robust and durable than the RFS series.

If it's a low maintenance KTM trailbike you want then the LC4 series is for you. The price you pay is extra weight over the full on enduro EXC machines. The old 625SXC LC4 & the new 690 Enduro R LC4 are the most dirt focussed of the LC4 bikes, big as Oscar says but OK for trail rides as long as you have the right combination of size, strength & skill.
The 640 LC4 Enduro & 640 LC4 Adventure come with wider seats, bigger tanks etc & are a more biased to longer distance riding, but will still do the rough stuff fairly well. Even that 02 Enduro in the link above has better suspension than virtually anything else sold new today in the 600+ trailbike class, with the exception of it's replacement, the 690.

Oh yeah - my LC4 (SXc625) is good for road, adv rides and trail rides but not enduro's (kinda like me).

Dont compare the XT to an XR, big difference,
and the ktm aint lighter than the XR.
