    New Mexico bans traffic cameras

Another US state, after 3 yrs, has decided to do away with traffic cameras...http://thenewspaper.com/news/30/3084.asp

State Transportation Commission Chairman Johnny Cope said in a news release. "While the true safety impact of the use of these cameras is still murky at best, one thing has become clear to the Commission -- more and more New Mexico cities seem to be putting driver-generated revenues ahead of sound traffic management techniques; frankly, that concept really troubles me."

Given the increasing ammount of "big brother" mentality the american legislators have been showing in the last decades, this is really surprising.

However, a good initiative is a good initiative: kudos on them for looking things straight in the eye and taking the right decision.

Except for government-biased/sponsored ones, every study on speed and traffic cameras done in UK (the country with the most and longest experience on this matter) has been unable to prove/show a clear traffic improvement or decrease in accident percentage, in many cases accident percentage going up after the cameras installation.

we aint there yet, not in palmy anyways, think we have three boxs, but only one camera gets swapped round em! But fair enuf, when they stop being about traffic management, get rid of them.

If only the UK could import the legislators from New Mexico. They certainly could use them.
