It's a bit like the view that all the safety devices that cars have built in to them these days has led to drivers using up that additional degree of protection by driving less safely than they would have done if they were in an old Cortina. I reckon that if they made it compulsory to ride around naked the number of bike crashes would fall significantly.
Whilst I agree with your comment about car drivers now being insulated from driving I don't think hypothermia is a viable alternative to ATGATT for motorcyclists although it would make catching speeders easier. http://www.stuff.co.nz/life-style/mo...rs-hypothermia

I've seen some pretty stupid things out there, but I agree ATGATT can be over the top sometimes.
I ride in normal pants and skate shoes quite often, but always wear gloves, helmet and jacket
And we all know that some chick that bought a step-thru for $500 or whatever won't go and spend triple that again on proper gear.
But you can't say these people aren't adding to the problem, ACC pays for injury recovery so more injuries means more money.

Anybody that has seen Twist of the Wrist 2, or read the book, will know about SRs and their effect which is basicly all your automatic reactions to danger are the wrong thing to do on a bike and I really think that I am alot safer as an inexperienced rider if I can have some trust in my gear

I think they should expand the law to cover gloves, helmet and closed in shoes as a minimum but to take it any further would be stupid.

There is the flip side of this arguement that an unprotected rider is more likely to die from a given accident (often made worse by the above mentioned SR phenomenon) and if they die they would cost ACC less, if anything at all.

And then there is the times when the bike/scooter isn't at fault, (I saw a BMW come damn close to wiping out some guy on an old UJM last night, cut him off, the guy on the bike locked up the back and stopped maybe an inch off hitting the BMW front right guard, I was behind the BMW in the que to get out of the carpark and saw the whole thing, the woman didn't see the guy on the bike untill he came to a full stop more or less right in front of her I saw her jump and brake violently then she just drove off like nothing had happened - needless to say I kept my distance after that) In a situation like this I would much prefer to be wearing all the gear but

But at the end of the day, without genuine statistics, we are all just guessing.
And people have the right to be stupid and I support that right, - Darwins theory in action

    It was a 09 150cc Piaggio Fly,not a slow 50cc Scoot.
Go to Rome or Barcelona mate - there's millions of 'em doing that.
