Speed camera - SH1 Atiamuri Bridge

Further to the below notice, there has also been installed a fixed speed camera at this site.

I am glad it is there, I have always slowed down to the 50 over it since it was posted, mainly because I don't want to have to go the long way round if i'm not on the bike.

If the camera was there as an enforcement tool - ie to MAKE people slow down to the 50 k's, surely they would put up signs by the limit signs saying "enforced by camera". Then every thinking individual would make damn sure they slowed down to 50 K to go over the bridge, and nail it up to 120 again once safely across (most of em do).

If it was merely for revenue gathering, those ignorant slobs for whom the law doesn't apply will hit mid-bridge at around 90 K's, get flashed and receive their infringement notice in the mail a week or so later. The bridge will collapse, and their Mrs will be screaming at them "IT"S THE SAME DAY DAVID!!!!"

Please slow down going over the bridge

    21 December 2009 SH1 Atiamuri Bridge - Traffic Restrictions

Members are advised of new traffic control instrastructure and signage that has been installed on the Atiamuri Bridge to slow down the speeds across the structure. The structural state of the bridge is defective and NZTA are trying to preserve the life of the bridge until a new one is built. The current 50 km/h speed limit is to be retained and they have installed centre road marker poles to slow down the traffic crossing the bridge.

Following queries made by the Association, NZTA have advised that these poles are designed to rebound and if necessary wide loads can straddle these to make their way over the bridge. They are 900mm high approaching the bridge and 600mm high on the bridge itself. Loads travelling on overweight permits are still banned.

The Association seeks the assistance of members to keep to the posted speed limit across the bridge of 50 km/h for heavy vehicles.
    Keep on chooglin'

When I was in Taiwan, the cops would sit on the side of the road in their marked cop cars on the motorways with their disco lights flashing; they were visible for a very long distance. They would bust out their radar gun, and surprisingly enough, some people would actually be stupid enough to speed in front of the coppers. Now that's what I call road safety, not just revenue gathering.
