    91/95/98

    Based on the sellers advice I'm running my CR on 95 fuel. Recently, remote and rural, we could only get 91 for a short period. Around home I can get 98 easily.
    For non competitive riding (IE not racing) what's the benefits of using any of those fuel types? Someone said there isn't much/any difference between them, is it all hype?

    This has been discussed a lot on the forums (so start searching).

    If I had to sum it up; it your engine isn't designed to take advantage of the higher octane rating then you wont gain anything from it. Using a higher octane is only wasting your money.

    My personal guess is an 11 year old small capacity engine wont have been designed to run on 95 or 98 Octane, but that is my guess.

    As usual the answer is "it depends"

    Depending on the motor - for ordinary running you probably wont notice any difference.

    But too low octane may cause pre-ignition ("pinking" or "knocking") when under load. This is "a bad thing" as it can damage the engine.

    Some modern engines have sensors that will retard the engine timing to alleviate the symptoms. This reults in a (slight) loss of power

    And engine work that raises the compression will often require a higher grade fuel

    What does your bike's owner's manual call for? Thats what I'd be using...

    20 litre container, buy 95 & use that only.........It's a high performance motor, look after it.

    95/98 For sure. the extra $2-$3 a day will save you in the long run.

    I thought most 2strokes were fairly low compression so 91 would be fine, as long as it's fresh.

    run whatever its carbs are tuned for, chances are being a racebike itll be 95-98

    MX bikes are typically jetted more aggressively than trail bikes - even from stock. For the sake of a couple of bucks a ride you are risking $100's of dollars of damage. I'm sure there are people that run 91 all day long fine, but I don't think it's worth the risk.

    Its like $1 a tank to use 98. I just use 98.

    In my 250, I don't mix the fuel with other types. I either run one or the other. I just do this for a piece of mind, good oil and good fuel has to be good for the bike.


    As for the fuel, 91 is a no go for me. Either V-Power or BP Ultimate.

    pffft i dont see what all the hum drum is with fuels , i use what ever i can get, one week it might be 98 the next it could be 91, sometimes its a mixture of both. ive done that for years and never had any problems, all the fuel we get in this country is contaminated with herpes anyway

    I know I wont be buying your bike I kid ;P

    I dont use 91 for mine, but am happy to use whatever 95/98 that the gasstation has.
