Because the guy obviously has no idea what they are worth so why not try and get a few dollars less? Its not like hes going to kick you off his property. He simply says no and you agree to the 4k!

Ive told people to fuck off for the same behaviour, so yeah, cudda backfired if the vendor took exception.

I'd wager he did know what they were worth, and the 4k was more of a token price than an ignorant one. If I was that loaded (he owns Gulf Oil) and I saw an oportunity to get rid of some 'junk' and make someones day then why not. But if he tried to take me for a sucker it would've soured the whole experience.

why offer 3500? obvious! because stated that the other guy had no idea of how much those bikes would be valued, you have to fix the idea that his price was the right one, or better a bit too high.
