auckland city parking

I've been thinking about getting a bike for a while, but I haven't had the cash. But I'm working this summer, and next year I'll be starting at Auckland University of Technology, and I need to figure out how I'm going to get there. If I can use a bike to get in to town, it'd be a good excuse to get one. Basically what I'm wondering about is the parking. In St Paul street, I've seen designated motorcycle parking, but it falls between "pay and display" parking signs. Does that mean it applies to bikes as well? If so, where do you display a ticket on the bike? Is there anywhere that I can find out what the rules are about parking in Auckland city? I tried looking on the Auckland city council website with no luck.

Dude, don't think for a second that you have to pay for parking your bike at AUT. You'll notice where all the bikes are parked outside the engineering building that there is a designated motorcycle park. Its free and there is usually a space.

Likewise I park my bike under the building, but thats kind of a secret so you'll have to figure that one out for yourself!!!

After about 6 months of catching the bus into town I'd had enough and bought myself a motorbike. Its a lot cheaper, a lot quicker, and a lot easier. My advice, get yourself a bike over the Summer - you won't regret it!!!

I go into the city almost exclusively on my bike. I just park anywhere except on foot paths, keep the bike perpendicular to curb at begining or end of row. Never had a ticket and once asked the "metermaids" about it, the reply was no tickets unless blocking access, footpath or inconsiderate parking.

If I cann't find a convenient spot on the kerb, I just park on the footpath - as long as you don't block access, the wardens don't seem to mind!

Outside the City Library in Lorne St is a good place, but better still is the Aotea Carpark - it's free, under cover, and under surveillance.

Andrew, I've seen somone riding out of under the ws building, so I think I know what you're talking about.

MikeL, do you mean the big underground Aotea Carpark? I'll have to check it out, it might be good as it's close to AUT.

Yes. I work in Federal Street and although there's a dedicated motorcycle park at the end of the street, I preferred to use the Aotea carpark. I don't any more because I now have a space in my own building car park.

Hey Andrew (and anyone else that cares to comment),

This may sound like a dumb question, but I'm the kind of person that has a tendency to worry about things.

What do you do with your gear (jacket, pants, and helmet) when you get to AUT? Are there lockers, or do you carry it, or do you just wear it?

Oh, and MikeL, do you just sneak past the barriers at the Aotea carpark? I went and had a look on sunday and it looks like you could. But if it's under surveillance, wouldn't they see you sneaking in and out?

I went and got my helmet, jacket, pants and gloves (already got leather boots that will do) yesterday, and my licence is booked for the 20th of december, so I just have to wait and save money for a bike

Erik, I put my all my gear into a locker in the engineering building. When you see a vacant locker you just go and claim it with a padlock or whatvever you wish to use.

You'll need to be quick though as these lockers are generally get full within the first week of classes, so you'll want to get one ASAP.
Oh and btw they don't cost a cent to use, but at the same time AUT don't take any responsibility if they get broken into.
