    Attn : Electricians

I have an idea which invovles making a product that requires electrical current.

My dad who has a licence to make stuff for his company is trying to desuade me of making said product till I get my licence.

Ok, so what's this got to with bikes?

Well, on a racetrack you can ride without a road licence, ride a bike that doesn't have a WOF or Rego. So why can't you make a device which aides in racing but doesn't actually get taken on the track?

Am I missing a great big point here due to stuborness or is does my dad need to learn a thing or two? (either option is upsetting)

    His points are as follows.

-If it's made by a qualified electrician, it's OK
-If it is under 110v, it's OK
-If it has little to no electrical interference, it's OK
-If it passes a ESTI specifications, it's OK

He also keeps going on about these little stickers with his number on them which he puts on everything he alters/makes/installs.....?

    My point is

    It's on a race track....different rules apply.....

    .....do they or don't they?
I don't particularly care who's right or wrong in this case, but what I actually have to do to make my product.... when I do, it'll hopefully benefit our little racing community.

No, it has got to adhere to the electrical regulations no matter where it is.
Are the buildings at the race track exempt from the building regulations?

Yeah I thought my dad was right
    Damn it
Ah well... At least I can still ask my dad for some help on that front till I get my licence

You might be one of the successful applicants

I'm also thinking about maybe making a solar powered bike.
Obviously it's just in the "just an idea" stage.
But think about it. The light frames and fearings you can get these days.
Different types of solar panels and battery packs...damn....wouldn't it be so cool if the next step in bike evolution came from NZ again....from this KB community...Damn
....Sorry getting a little wound up there....I might just start with small projects first....and maybe even finish my degree....so I can finance my Solar Bike

Damn...I had waaaaay too much time being sick...I'm all like delerious or summat.

    Common sense really.....
Just because race vehicles are exempt from road use regulations, doesn't mean that all laws are null and void at a race track. Otherwise people could perhaps murder each other at race meetings. Still, it would be an even greater spectator sport.......

Well I have heard that " Rubbin's Racin' " ... sounded like a jail term to me but hey...(I have no idea where that came from)

At the time I just couldn't understand how you were allowed to build a bike including with it's electrics, but you couldn't make tyre warmers or a solar power generator *shrug*

I think I have brain fry...I'm feeling light headed Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

    Heya Slippy

    A few points:

Your solar powered bike would only be low voltage DC - which means you do not need to be a registered electrician to do it.

You would need: Electric motor(s), lightweight deep cycle batteries (power smoothing), solar collectors, charging circuitry, motor speed controller and assorted cut-off switches and control potentiometers (to disable the bike under certain circumstances and to instruct the controller box how much juice to feed to the motor(s)).

You'd probably be looking at anything from 12 to 72 volts DC - well under 110VDC - probably around the 24-48V mark as a good trade off of power and mass of batteries/solar collectors (which have to be carried on the damn thing).

Motors are rated in continous power, not peak (can peak at up to 20 times the rated continuous wattage) and have a different power dynamic from IC engines.

The power and performance of electric motors is proven - look at the Wellington Unit and the electric passenger trains that travel the length of the North Island. OK, they're higher voltage and very powerful motors but the vehicles are also thousands of times heavier than what you're envisioning...

I am extremely interested in electric vehicles, home EV conversions etc. And I am right behind anyone who wants to look into the possibilities.

Don't let anyone tell you your dreams are unrealistic. Other people have done similar - and who knows, you might be the one who, having studied what others have done and played around with it a bit, makes the discovery that revolutionises the field.

Everyone remembers James Watt in association with steam engines and his name is given to the unit of power - but he did not invent the steam engine - steam engines were already in use and James Watt was skilled in their repair. What he did, was improve the steam engine to the point that a whole new era of steam power was ushered in.

Nurture your dreams - read, research, cogitate - you could be the future "James Watt" of the solar vehicle for all we know. If you want info and resources, PM me and I'll send you what I have for starters.

No...that refers to what qualifications you must have if you are working for reward.
The intent is that you are allowed to carry out a limited amount of work in your own home without qualifications.

Well the solar collectors you can get these days can be incredibley light, liquid and even see through. therefore you could use them as fairings, or even as fairing blades. I have info on that somewhere.
