I am sorry to say that I have suffered from complete memory loss of the accident, and the whole week that followed. Everything is a complete blank at it seems now that I was unconscious for at least an hour from a decent blow to the head. So I cant help there. Believe me, I REALLY wish I could. I more than any one want to know what happened, as I thought I had my head on my shoulders with settling in very gently to the R6, but it seems I will never know.
All I will say is I have read the police crash investigation report, and I was very pleased with how I was acting at the time.
Mistakes happen. I hope to try and learn from this, but alas if I can't remember a thing it will take me some time but I'm ok with time.
Sorry guys, wish I had more info. But I just don't know a thing. I went back to the accident sight to try and jog my memory but it didnt work at all. Who knows... this has become a new mystery in my life.
i havent piped up till now but want to add my best wishes to your recovery.I havent really met you but was impressed with your level headed approach to your new bike and was really astonished to read of your accident.
Re your hiring stuff i think the hospital should have fronted up with some equipment? When i had a mere ruptured achilles they gave me a stool for the shower and a trolley to move stuff around while i was on crutches. Most of the agencies seem to think we know all our entitlements,so dont be afraid to ask.!
All the best Katie
Paul
Just look after that head injury Katie. I underestimated mine and paid for it dearly.
Good to hear you are on the mend!
Took 3 bikers out around the country roads here today.... reminded me of you and the other new riders we took out for rides on Tuesdays with Guy in Wellington.
KP do not apologise hon, I would be surprised if you could remember .. and in the big scheme of things its not that important, what is important that you came too & had the forthought of mind to use your cell & get help to you .. much kudos chick .. accidents happen and we are rapt that you are still with us to fight another day ..
Have toKarma ... Justice catches up eventually !!

Unfortunatley the chair the hospital were trying to give me was far too big for my little shower, so I went and hired one to get my by and I'm so pleased I did. I purchased a "grabber" too as bending is limited and it helps me to dress myself etc.
Because I was atmitted to Wellington hospital, and I live in Upper Hutt, I wasn't allowed to take anything from them, and the hutt hospital has things that were far too big. I only live in a little house, but am getting on just fine with the items i did buy and hire. I brought new clothes and tops as everything has to go over my waist so the colder days are a bit tricky. Because of the halo, I can't wear jackerts or jumpers as i basically have no shoulders and they all fall off. So blankets have become very useful.
I inspected my helmet the other day for the first time. Some very strong impact damage to it, and the timing of it all makes sence that i was out like a light for a bit. I have fuzzy eyesight now, but I am putting that down to having the screws of the halo into my head, and everything is just a little out of foucs.
As for my approach to the new bike, i was one day away from booking into some training with Karel Pavich for her to help me with the transition. I can't say too much about the accident, but as I say from the police report, I am at ease that I did have my head on my shoulers that day, and I remember telling myself as i took off from the hill climb "take it easy. Gently, slowly, smoothly, look ahead, feel the bike, take time to learn it all again." I was big on this, it was so important to me as I knew just how much of a change it was for me. I by all means and not a silly rider. I do have much to learn, and I will take my time learning the basics again. In this case I feel that accidents can happen, and we can't always avoid them. I'll be back on biker later in the year, and going back to basics to get my head round it all again. No harm at all in doing that. Ill get there, with a big smile too!

Sorry about my typing everyone. I still have a sore shoulder from the fracture, and one arm in a cast. Gees, it had to be my left one too didnt it? hehe
As already said hun - dont beat yourself up about it and dont apologise. Those of us who know you (and many who dont), know that your approach to learning about your new bike was done in the safest and cautious possible way. You prob will never remember what happened that day but you have seen the crash site, seen the issues with that particular stretch of road. The one thing we will all learn from this is to never underestimate the roads we travel on. What appears to be a straight, innocuous stretch of road, can be a death trap in waiting. We are all so lucky that you survived the day and your gorgeous spirit remains as strong and as positive as it was before.
Your recovery sounds as though it will be a long slow process, but just do it as your body demands. Dont fit into anyone elses timetable or regime. You alone know what you are capable of. I know that when the time is right, you will be back on your bike again, and we will all be beside you, heading for the nearest garlic bread or wedges outlet.
Always impressed by your positivity Katie.
I did that very thing, repeating the Prorider level 1 course on the new bike a year after doing it the first time and at a different track. Well worth doing and recommend it to every rider keen to improve/identify bad riding habits and focus on a good full day of upskilling and fun. Repeating the course highlighted some key areas I need to improve on.
Will aim to do a Level 2 course next year all going well.
I look forward to hearing more of your recovery and hopefully your return to riding on a replacement bike if that is where life leads you.![]()
Great to hear you are on the mend. As one who has had a neck injury I understand the pain, frustration
and
the clothing issues. Lucky I'm a bloke and it was summer so topless wasn't a problem
.
Hopefully the eyesight will improve with the removal of the halo.
I carved up my helmet with a saw and was suprised by the damageto the foam inside.
Hang in there and don't be too proud to ask for help. I made that mistake a few times and paid for it. The biker community is there when you need them![]()
If you are what you eat, then I'm fast, cheap and easy
I have a gas axe and a welder! What do you mean "it won't fit"?

Thanks babe, that is greatly appreciated.
oooooo good news though hun... because of my accident, there is now signage going up on the corner and stretch of road. I was so thrilled to hear that, and the police officer was also very thrilled. So thats great news.
And to be honest, I'm actually doing wonderfully, and dont really have anything to complain about. I start physio later this week, I finally have an interview with ACC and think an income again is only a matter of week away (land lord will be thrilled hahaha), and I have an incredibly exciting appointment with my new doctor on Monday. I will be getting full x-rays again, and he will be giving me a date that the halo and last cast come of. Couldnt be more excited. I will have a wonderful date to work very hard for, and it will push me to really get going and get better.
Yuuuuuuus! Loving life, absolutely loving it!
