ive been down it heaps. in winter they close it sometimes because of ice. its very steep and narrow in some parts with one way bridge sections, with lots of twistees. still a cool road though.
"I saw, I came, I conquered".
ok, so what ive read it seems like its more of a summer road. ive ridden the south island no worries, but only the main roads and mostly coastal. very rarely used inland roads. but that was in november, so less chance of ice etc. im thinking i will go back over in the summer, for longer, so will take the pyes rd then, cos i would love to give it a go.
so, i will either go te puke way or putaruru. will decide on the day itself. im planning on leaving about 6am to get there by midday [allowing an hour for photo stops or other delays]
thanks for the advice everyone! much appreciated.

go down it, its fine, its not like it was 6 months ago, they have done heaps of upgrades, afterall it is about to become the main road from tga to rotorua again when the link onto the toll road is finished.
going around the lakes or up the kaimais isnt going to be any easier.
Do it, just be carefull. Most vehicles on that road can't do the speed limit anyways.
I find I'm always catchin up to cars even when I'm being cautious.
Slow up when approaching the tops of the hills and you'll be fine, they're like blind corners and some have a steep slope on other side. Easy
I live on pyes pa rd so if ya chuck a msg my way I'll let u know if its gonna be dangerous (icy).
geez, you guys make it a hard decision. lol. ive finally decided i will decide on the day. theres 3 ways that i can see and not much time difference between them. means if i miss one turn off, theres no reason to turn back. guy at work said that none of the roads should be too icy by the time i will be hitting them [mid morning-ish.] pyes would be the best by far, due to the close proximity of my friends place [shes like 2 corners off it, lol. going by google maps, its maybe 2-3mins]
juzz, thanks for that. i will flick you my cell number and will txt you on the day. its ages away yet, but i want to get organised early. [if i didnt need the bike, i would have it already loaded.]
