Coming over to NZ in February, would love some tips

my name is jan, i´m 19 years old and i momentarily live in berlin, germany, which is going to change soon, as it seems, because i received a letter of confirmation from victoria university in wellington offering me a college place for biomedical sciences.
so i´m actually preparing everything, visas and even x-rays, good-conduct certificates and so forth for ur suspicious embassy, to be able to start studying, coming over to nz, in february 2011...or maybe directly after new years eve, so i can get used to the new environment and stuff, before starting to study
u might aks urself what all this has to do with motorcycling
...its simple. i love motorcycling, i ride an incredible r6, with the meanest exhaust and carbon everywhere, steering damper, oh god just everything i spent so miuch time and money too for that thing, whatever...so when i´ll be gone my brother will take her over...
which leads me to the question what im gonna drive in nz?!

what would you guys recommend? im a little concerned, because of the strong winds in wellington; are the winds that strong that, say if ur riding a nice curve hanging off, knee on the ground, and the wind "kicks in" unexpectedly, could that make u fall?
could one say, that the wind in nz actually makes motorcycling more dangerous?

and if that is so, do u guys ride supersport motorcycles a lot, or do u prefer nakes bikes, enduros, choppers and so forth?

what kind of motorcycle would u say is the best for new zealand?

i was privately hoping to get myself an r1; are their streets at all where one could use the full power of an r1 for at least 1 or 2 gears, like just enjoying accelaration at full throttle?

what about the weather? in germany, we have this term "motorcycle season", which is most typcally, summer when is the best time to go motorcycling in nz, and do u have a time of the year with only very very little rain so that one could head out and explore newzealand by bike?. that must be so amazing

i´m so excited, looking forward to it so much =) not just the biking, more living in newzealand in general

Hey there! The wind in New Zealand is not bad at all, the weather overall is pretty mild.
Middle of summer is the best time for riding, December-January but you can pretty much ride all year long, it's just colder and wetter in winter.
You can ride any kind of bike you like here, you'd be nuts to tour NZ on a chopper though.
If you want an R1, get one! It would be great here too.

Tip 3 don't believe all the advice given on Kiwibike

Back to the the tourist info thing... depends what you want to see and do while you are over here... South Island west coast, Foridland, Catlins, Central Otago, lakes district, crown range, lindus pass... Top of the South...

What kind of Motorcycle best for NZ... What type of riding do you want to do... touring on the seal... unsealed... bit of both... track racing... you say you have an R6... if you like that plenty of roads here that it would be suitable on... but remember NZ don't have Autobahns and we can have 4 seasons in one day which can wreck havoc to the quality of the roads in places...

Wind in Wellington... yes it can get windy in Wellington, but you will know the days it is probably safer to catch the bus than ride... and they are few and far between, you will also learn a few new skills in riding then as well

Motorcycle Season here in NZ is well all year round to the hard core bikers, rain... well its only water and you are not going melt however December, January, Feburary March are the best months for good weather riding... But its May now and most of the days have been great for a ride... (I'm thinking I may go to the Brass Monkey even)

Tip number two,stay away from the North Island.

And if you are not white stay away from south island (namely Christchurch)

Climate is more related to location than the time of year.

Wellington manages generally windy, crappy weather all year, except for no reason at all, it will turn on a beautiful day without warning. At which time it is truely one of the worlds most beautiful harbour cities.

Go only 40km South to Marlborough, and you will have the wind, but it wont rain, sometimes for months on end.

Go 100 km west of Marlborough to Nelson, you will have little wind. It rains mostly at night, and is invariably sunny during the day.

Leave a windy wet Wellington day and ride 50 km North to Kapiti. You may be able to sit on the beach and enjoy the sun. You may find the same if you head north up state highway 2. Once over the mountain pass, wide dry plains with low rainfall are ahead of you. Dry and warm, hot even during summer, and colder than Wellington (But Drier) all year.

The best bike ?

Its a small country, but its a big empty bastard. Sports-bikes love the narrow windy mountain roads, and the police love the sports-bikes. Distances look small on a map, but there is often a bewildering amount of things to do and see... so tourers can be the go.

I cant make my mind up which bike is best, so you have no show...

So to sum it up,

The North Island is good for twisty stuff. It's also OK for loop touring.

South is good for touring, but it has some OK twisty stuff.

There's no point going to the South South Island for motorcycling.

Stay away from Auckland.

Wellington gets a bit breezy.

Christchurch is just plain dangerous.

Get some warm gloves.

Gore girls are easy.
