Problem with the 600 is it's a bit of an orphan - they have a lot of differences with the more common 900. By '95 most of the issues were ironed out with the 900 and I'd assume the 600 as well.
600's don't have rattley clutches - one of the differences with the 900 is that they use a wet clutch like most other bikes, hence no rattle.
Regarding belts - unless you know they have been recently changed do it yourself. It's a quick and easy job, new belts are cheap insurance. They are supposed to be changed every 10,000km or 2 years, a lot of people forget about the time interval and they can degrade over time due to the harsh environment they live in. Belts are a different part for the 600 than the 900. Never heard of cam pulleys being any sort of indication of belt change interval, the pulleys are steel and won't be damaged by a rubber belt.
