1995 Ducati 600 Super Sport - any problems?

Hi,

I have a friend looking at this Ducati on trade me. She wants me to go with her and have a look. Apart from the normal things to cheeck is there any faults with this year of ducati or anything i should look for. Any normal or un normal rattles, dont they run that dry clutch setup?

Im used to jap bikes so this is going to fun to test ride even if we dont get it.

Any info would be good as i cant find anything really bad about them on the net.

lol i should have seen this comming, if you where 40-50 you might think so but she is a bit old for me. I found a nice bike for her son who is my mate so now i got the job of looking at this bike.

Yes those bikes do tend to have clattery clutches.

Aside from the usual wear and tear or accident damage you want to try to accertain a service history. The cam belts need top be changed as scheduled (30 000km?) - and the state of the cam belt pulleys will tell you a lot about how well the bike has been maintained

Problem with the 600 is it's a bit of an orphan - they have a lot of differences with the more common 900. By '95 most of the issues were ironed out with the 900 and I'd assume the 600 as well.

600's don't have rattley clutches - one of the differences with the 900 is that they use a wet clutch like most other bikes, hence no rattle.

Regarding belts - unless you know they have been recently changed do it yourself. It's a quick and easy job, new belts are cheap insurance. They are supposed to be changed every 10,000km or 2 years, a lot of people forget about the time interval and they can degrade over time due to the harsh environment they live in. Belts are a different part for the 600 than the 900. Never heard of cam pulleys being any sort of indication of belt change interval, the pulleys are steel and won't be damaged by a rubber belt.

The pulleys are very exposed. It's not the belt that damges them, but the weather etc - they tend to grit, water etc etc on them. Then they damage the belts. Rust on the pulleys - or worse yet - seized ones (yes it does happen) - tend to be indicative of a bike that has had a hard life....

You should ask McJim http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/member.php/6494-McJim He (reluctantly) sold one recently and for less than what you are looking at. Looks overpriced to me. His was a lovely bike which he cherished.

As for issues - no more issues than with any other kind of bike...mind you replacement parts for the 600ss turned out to be waaaaaay cheaper than Honda replacement parts for the VTR 250 - go figure.
