The ONLY time they get asked to show ANY very low level roadcraft is the 6R test.
So what's the difference between a 6L rider and a class 1 on a moped?
The 6L is limited by to fear of getting caught over 70kph (big LoL) and the moped is physically restricted to 50kph, 10kph lower than the average speed of regular traffic.
No compulsion to do any formal training for the 6l either.
The whole thing is messy and needs some thought. (bigger LoL)

indeed, would make far more sense to have to have your 1R before riding a moped or getting 6L, only a 6 month wait there anyway. This sort of thing just highlights how much of a joke the driver licensing system is.

Yep, its a good idea. In fact, its just a bicycle. Pedal hard, and your push-bike will go faster. But it wont have brake lights, indicators and at best has a tiny useless LED headight. Mopeds need less restrictions, not more. A moped rider wont kill a van full of his school mates, lose control on a wet road and climb a curb killing a child, or be used as a getaway vehicle. Mopeds should need no registration, no licence and be available to all.

For some reason, NZers just seem to love licences, registrations, etc etc... even in socialist France, and Russia I can ride my moped without rules... here I am surrounded by people who dont ride em, who want more rules.

It's just about the money. The govt wants every cent they can, so that means everything is taxed to the eyeballs, especially the really fun stuff. Why don't they just take all out wages and give us an allowance?

Well I'm glad they went back on that moped thing. After reading about the shopping trolley moped, I was tempted to see what absurdity I put make, and put a moped plate on it..

I find this site (ACC Scooters) a little insulting. Good effort and a start but I thought we were the bigger risk???

Struggling to see how hard it is for ACC (rapists), NZTA (bullshitters) and Road Policing (revenue collectors) to follow or mimic the TAC and spokes (Vic Pol) sites and methodology.

+1 for the comments in previous posts about how bizarre the scooter thing is.

Once upon a time a moped was a bicycle shaped thing with pedals and a small petrol engine. Somehow this has evolved into only a cc limit and power limit and the requirement for pedals has gone, however they are still called mopeds?

It seems bizarre to me that the easiest way to get on the road by yourself is to do a theory test for your 1L, buy a scooter and away you go. If you want to ride a 50cc motorcycle you do a basic handling test, if you want to drive a car you need a licenced driver to supervise you.

Add to that no WOF requirement and it seems even more bizarre. A guy at work borrowed his friend's scooter while his car was being fixed, the front axle was loose, the wheel bearings were shagged, the speedo and tail light didn't work, she hadn't noticed any of it.

Are there any ACC stats specifically for 'moped' accidents or do they just get classified as motorcycles?

Whats the difference between a 1L and 6L
1L is restricted to 2kw and physically restricted 50kph.(ish)
6L has no power limits just cc limits and nothing to stop a "squirt" above 70kph.
Neither learns how to manage themselves in the real world before hitting the traffic.(or being hit?)
It like an artist trying to do a brilliant painting before learning how to hold the brush properly.

But even if they all fell off at the same time an ditched your arse on the road, at 45 km/hr you get up and walk away.
