    Buying a deregistered bike?

    heres the deal,

    the guy bought a bike that had its registration lapsed. he never got around registering it and now i'm considering buying it from him.

    i read the good info on Frosty's thread: http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/sh...e-on-the-road.

    and went happily to see the bike and all, now here's the situation;

    following Mr Frosty's advice,
    i went to the police station on Cnr Jean Batten Place And Fort Street, Auckland CBD and explained that i was about to buy a de-registered bike and needed to know if it was of interest of the police. the lovely police lady went on: "we don't do the check for stolen vehicles here, if you are buying a second hand there's some websites that do that and lalalalala... go and do a check on carjam" - thank you very much for all your help.

    came home and carjam the #plate, resulted in:

    Reported stolen or wanted otherwise by the Police?: The requested plate is not assigned to a vehicle at present. Therefore, stolen vehicle check does not apply. Please check the current plate for the vehicle or use VIN number.
    ran the vin# and got the same result. should i go back to the police station with a print from carjam?

    afff

    well, back on the topic;
    who in nz can tell me if the bike is of the interest of tha police?

    cheers

    ps. i respect and understand the police officers (my father was in the force), they provide a essential service for the community and really, this is a small issue taking in to consideration of what they deal with. but in saying that, i still need to know if its ok to go forward with the purchase...

    You will need the police to confirm the vehicle is of no interest to the police before you can re-rego. Try another officer or ring up for an appointment?

    Yeah, good luck. I have to do exactly the same with my project before I get too far.

    Never had to deal with that situation before, but I would suggest printing out the Car jam report with the VIN and Plate numbers etc and taking it into the police and asking them to confirm if the bike is still stolen or was recovered. Otherwise you could find yourself in a great deal of trouble

    I would suggest talking to VTNZ about it. They can refer the bike's details to NZTA to be investigated; NZTA lodge it with interpol (yes, for real, interpol). Try C & P motors in Grey Lynn or Mt Wellington VTNZ, they are real helpful.

    I've just been through this and the police no longer do stolen vehicle checks or confirm whether or not it is "a vehicle of interest." The North Shore police showed me the memorandum from cop HQ saying so (because I was doing my scone about how the bloody hell was I going to provide the VIN guys with something proving I owned the bike).

    The best you can do is get a receipt off the seller, or a letter stating that it was not stolen. Then you have to go to a JP and do a statutory declaration that you have bought the bike in good faith and it is not stolen. You will need this for re-vinning. Citizens advice bureaux have days when a JP sits in and you can get Stat Decs signed.

    (This of course does not protect you from having the bike repossessed if it is, indeed stolen).

    Then you take your letter along to the VIN place and they will re-vin the bike (Cost around $300).

    Just a note here: The VIN place found my original reg from 1972, so they must have access to the main database but whether that would tell them it's been stolen or not, I don't know - it might pay to go direct to them and ask.

    Then you can fix any faults the vin guys find, and get it registered, giving the Government an opportunity to give you another bloody good reaming.

    tell the useless lady that you want to speak with someone who knows what they are talking about. as far as im concerned, when someone comes in and asks for confirmation that the vehicle is legit, it is due diligence on part of the police to make sure that stolen vehicles are not, in fact being sold.

    Go back with the last rego number of the bike and ask again if its wanted by the cops. VTNZ or wherever you plan to go to get it revinned can give you the form that you need signed by the police.

    Im in the middle of the process at the moment. VTNZ have referred the bikes details to NZTA for their approval. As stated previously, NZTA have lodged the bikes details with Interpol. Once the bike is designated as being of no interest to Interpol, then the process proceeds. I know the Interpol part sounds a bit unreal, but that is what has been stated to me. The process can obviously differ somewhat from place to place; one place I spoke to was ready to put the bike thru the process without referring it to NZTA.
