    3L4NS1R is back in action!

The new mighty stallion! A 1996 KLR 250... and it's a damn sight more pretty than the ducati.

Spent saturday stripping it, changing out the spark plug, cleaning the filter, and generally having a tidy up of it, ready to put through it's paces this long weekend down in Tongariro with some mates over from Singapore (living the dream - dirt biking their way through NZ...).

We're planning on doing the 42 traverse and fishers... any opinions on which direction these should be tackled in? I'm thinking bottom to top?

Wow welcome back, been a long time. When did you get a Ducati?

Plus, nice little bike there,. You gonna repeat the long trip you've done couple of years ago?

If you can make it on Kiwibiker you can make it anywhere.

Either way, but usually top to bottom is recommended, Fishers "may" (yeah, right) be greasy & slippery, the 42nd you need to be mindful of river levels as they rise quickly with any rain.
Whangamomona and the roads around there, Pureora forest & tons of tracks in there, also look for a map of the tracks around the 42nd, it is rumoured that DOC produce one but I've never managed to locate it.
I would suggest good tyres for the central plateau at this time of year.

    Oh, and welcome back!

I would go against that and say bottom to top, South to North. Fishers isn't technically difficult either way but in the wet is a lot more work going uphill. On the 42nd there's a couple of sections that you'd been to be a confident rider if heading south.

Agreed on the tyres, this time of year both will be slippery and Fishers will have some decent bogs and you want something with proper knobs, not a 80/20 tyre road orientated tyre. I hope your mates have some experience doing rougher off road riding.

Had a silly moment near Christmas where I thought I was more the sports type. How wrong was I... brought a Ducati Monster 600, great bike, but the road is no playground... gravel and dirt is...

Got a bigger trip in mind at the moment - earnest planning is under way, kicking off 25th of December! All will be revealed in due course...

Cheers! Think I saw a map floating around this forum somewhere?! I may be wrong though...

And yeah, was considering more aggressive tyres... You reckon 606's will be aggressive enough? I'll need to wait and see how big (yeah. right... how small) my pay is this week.... :P

Yeah, they're pure dirtbikers - they do comp riding in Malaysia... The only thing that will possibly prevent them from leaving me in their roost is that it's a tad bit colder here than what they are used to....

I think I am actually agreeing with you, I meant top as highest point..National park end.

Tyres; 606 I have not used but I think it's agressive enough, similar to the MT21 isn't it? If it's got knobs not a tread then it's fine!

Sweet as, I was thinking highest point to lowest when I typed that... So an general uphill climb is a no no for it?

And yeah, knobs are on it atm, but not too confident in thier abilities - a 605 on the front that's seen better days, and a cheap but appears fairly aggressive trail wolf v206 on the back... if the money isn't looking too good I might just go for an 606 front...

Exxxxcellent. I think day light savings should signal the commencing of these... Have to get in as many rides as possible by the 25th of Dec!
