My goal in life is to be as good a person as my dog already thinks I am.
DON'T GET ME GOING!! They give me a job and then tell me I have to do it with one hand tied behind my back!!
This is not a school-yard people!! 'pax' and 'nibs' don't work!! It's lives we are dealing with.
Why shoudl there be any quarter given to those that break the rules when they 'see' a cop but go like hell when they don't?![]()

If a cop car in full sight slows down motorists, isnt this a good thing?
I support that view!Originally Posted by gav
Over here in "The World of the Speed Camera", originally the fixed cameras were grey and did not need to be signposted. Then it was realised that not only was this very, very unpopular with motorists (for which read "An awful lot of voters"), but the cameras were potentially CAUSING accidents as people unfamiliar with the road were panic-breaking, or ploughing into the back of drivers/riders aware of the camera locations.
So fixed location cameras were repainted yellow and warning signs on the approach to them were put up.
Similarly, the mobile cameras employed by the police, which could be set up behind bushes etc., were put into more public locations.
The idea, as someone said here, was that overt, rather than covert action being taken met with wider approval and was a safer way of controlling speed.
There are still a LOT of convictions - and as my chum Dave always says, if you are caught on camera, then you deserve everything that you get!
I'm no fan of the almost total dependence on fixed location cameras that is the reality of being on the road in the UK - we NEED traffic police to monitor all aspects of bad driving, not just speeding.
But surely if the actions of the police are felt to be 'sneaky' or 'underhanded', then they will not get the support of the public? Something they need in the fight against crime?
Scumdog, I understand perfectly when you say "Hey! no support = no prosecution = criminal goes free, who suffers? think about it!"... but how many people are going to think things through to the logical conclusion?
A hell of a lot of people will just think "They're not playing fair" (or rather more obscene words to that effect) and won't consider anything else, let alone aiding the police - a group of people they may well now consider to be "bending the law".
Trust is a two-way street.

So the police should only be allowed to catch criminals who feel bad about it? Veryone who thinks they are getting a hard time should walk?Originally Posted by Skyryder

Ok so lets call a Taxi then.........get the point Scumdog. Just keep focusing on taking money off the ordinary people while the big crims will do what they like. For example ....lets all walk over the Auckland harbour bridge....Police..No you can't do that...well maybe this time.......... Get a life and try and see what is going on around you and start working on the areas that need it. You and the other public servants just don't get it in the real world do you........ I am pleased I can see you and do not have to put up with the smart comments and shit face looks I get when one of you jumps out of the bushes and takes my money. We the public are not allowed to defend ourselves by punching you in the face so we have to take it..........at the moment........Keep hiding behind the badgeOriginally Posted by scumdog
Have a nice day
I don't think the public has a problem with the police trying to make roads safer (although Police get lodged with too much of the responsibility for this and Transit don't get enough), people (well me anyway!) have a problem with when an approach to make roads safer appears to be more geared towards revenue grabbing. That's what winds people up (well, me anyway!). Drive down a straight road with nothing around at 113 and -snap- someone in a bush just made $130 thanks.
I saw a good alternative to money grabbing the on the tele recently in a county in the UK. The county cops were getting a hard time for slaping everyone with fines so they have an alternative - when you get pulled over you can etiher get a ticket, or take 10 minutes to go back to the cop car, and then you're shown some pictures of gory road smashes and told about a story how some poor innocent person got killed by a dangerous driver. Result? Those who paid the money felt pissed off and drove off as fast as ever, those who got the lecture felt a bit sheepish and drove off feeling they needed to apply a bit more responsibility to their driving.
One of lifes mysteries: how much over the speed limit should you be allowed to go before you got a ticket, also what speed do you think the town/open road limit should be?
And how do you think the limit should be controlled, and with what type of penalty?
Meantime I'll continue to rip off the government by refusing to exceed the speed limit etc, instead I'll leave it to you bunch of whingers to pay my share of this so-called 'tax'![]()

Nice attempt at a troll Gixxer 4 ever, but just incase it ain't a troll and you ARE a slack-jawed, mouth-breathing, improvident lack-witted oxygen thief I'll answer a couple of your comments: Bad guys get money taken off them too. I do have a life and see a lot more of the 'real world' than most of the 'ordinary people' you mentioned. I don't think you have seen me. You never have had to 'defend' yourself against me. I don't need to 'hide behind the badge', never have, never will. Unlike some who I have to share this planet with I am my own man, fear nobody, have integrity, am honest and I doubt you have ever met me or 'walked a mile in my shoes' Have a nice day yourself.Originally Posted by Gixxer 4 ever

OK as a cop you are going to make me laugh and tell me hand on heart you own motorcycles and have never, and never will, ever exceed the speed limit. (I said this to Spud some time ago as he may remember and he answered honestly). You have dutifully always ridden at 50km/hr in town with your big ol Harley kinda jumping from one fire of a cylinder to the next, or you have it in first gear to keep it smooth. You get to 30km/hr roadworks and down to that speed exactly or less you go. On the open road you have never ever exceeded 100km/hr. You know it is so dangerous, that's how you behave. You jump in the work Commodore or whatever you drive and it never ever exceeds the speed limit unless you have your lights on and are on a job. I am sure if you tell me this is all true I reckon you are pulling my tit or something.Originally Posted by scumdog

What's the point of my post? Simple - we are all normal people and so are you and the law as it stands is an ass. You aren't to blame, you only do your job, but no use trying the moral high ground, few believe it and hence the pressure has come on the politicians and we are starting to see the odd crack in their approach with this instruction for visibility going out.
Cheers
