Most trucks have them at the rear of the chassis not the vehicle, indented from the rear about the same as on my bike, and normally they are covered in so much crap they are completly unreadable, might be time to stop cleaning it and let the chain oiler take it back to its unreadable greatness and not stop...... it sounds like that is what SAM the ginga wants.

By the way, got my letter with court date today...set for 12th October.

Seems bit faraway but good at least i dont loose the demerit points for while, i dont expect that i have much chance on winning it but dont care about the money... i had to appeal just out of principal because in my opinion this fine is discrimination against minority which motorcyclists definately are, and also i like to waste "their" time.

so Miloking how'd it go with the court / numberplate thing?
I read on a thread somewhere that someone had already won this sort of case, just looking for that now when I saw your thread.

    My thought too.

Wrong cop/wrong day = delay in trip + needless expense

Most of the time you would be OK but it's pushing it...

there's a heap of us out there now with vertical side mounted plates.
Mine got a wof with the vertical side mount.
I know people who have gotten certs & vins with the side mounted plates.
I asked nzta about it, they showed me where the law is on the net. It doesn't say they can't be side mounted & vertical.
They said it's 'an enforcement issue'.
So if a cop didnt like the way your plate was mounted he might give a ticket ('not mounted in the prescribed way').
Then you would need to contest it. Because as long as it's visible it's not actually illegal.

    SHORT STORY:
lost court, cop lied, fine reduced by $100 for no intent...

    LONG STORY:
Court date was 12th october...i turned up on the bike, Senior constable ACD868 turned up as well.
We both had the same documents, i had his notes from the day and he had photos and letters i had sent in trying to dispute the ticket.

He was asked to take the stand first, and started off by saying that as i drove past him that day(while he was pulling out of gas station) he couldnt read my plate clearly...
then he procceeded to say that i have apparently told him that "i bought the mount so i though its ok to put it on the bike" which was a lie as i clearly told him i bought the bike like that from previous owner, who had the plate mount put on by Cyclespot honda in takapuna when they fitted the yoshi pipe.... (i have reciepts for all that)
He also procceeded to "discredit" my photos i supplied by saying that bike in the picture is on a paddock stand which lifts the bike off the ground & makes plate more visible...like realy WTF? ( also supplied two other pics, with bike on the ground and looks exacly the same as bike is only 5cm in the air on the stand)

Anyway after about 30minute back and forth argument...between him,his lawyer and myself JPs left the court room to decide my fate....

Came back saying that they will reduce my ticket by half as there was no intention from me to hide the plate, but AS OFFICER said he couldnt see it properly that day so he must be right! (i wanted to say something about "optometrist visit" would be beneficial to the constable but decided its not realy worth it...)

    On the lighter side...

as i was sitting in the gallery waiting for deliberation, other police officer sat behind me and said "thats a nice blade outside is that yours?" and "why are you here?" ...i explained to him why and he only laughed and said he rides GSXR and if i "loose" the court i should go to Cyclespot and have them to refund me the mount cost as they sold me a illegal mount....but clearly this officer wouldnt give me any such a BULLSHIT ticket for it...

SO Moral of the story, buy these plate mounts/eliminators if you want...but if you get asshole cop you will get a ticket, if you get a good cop you wont.... (you decide yourself how many are assholes and how many are "cool biker cops")

Those JPs were a bit gutless, cos they split it both ways instead of making a clear decision. At least they halved the fine.
I gather your plate mount was one of those ones where the plate is horizontal & 'angled' so when you look from the rear, the letters are angled away from the viewer. I think those are actually illegal, cos the law says the plate should be 'upright', so you probably did ok, considering.
    Thanks for the report back.

They should design those bikes with something that hangs down at the back to attach the plate to IMO.

It's not really very clear exactly what they mean by "upright":

    http://www.legislation.govt.nz/regul...html#DLM201153

    6. Affixing of registration plates (other than trade plates)
Registration plates issued for a motor vehicle shall be displayed as follows:

    (a) in the case of a motor vehicle other than a motor vehicle of any of the kinds specified in paragraph (b), one plate shall be displayed on the front of the vehicle and one plate shall be displayed on the rear of the vehicle, and both plates shall be in an upright position and so displayed that every letter, figure, and distinguishing mark on the plate is easily visible:

    (b) in the case of any motorcycle, moped, tractor, or trailer, one plate shall be displayed on the rear of the vehicle in an upright position and so displayed that every letter, figure, and distinguishing mark on the plate is easily visible.

Can sideways by classed as "upright"? Does that make the details not "easily visible"?
Measure once, cut twice. Practice makes perfect.
