I got a ticket for an illegal plate once

went to court and defended it

plods refuses to give evidence for the prosecution when they heard my defence

I fought the case on the grounds of safety, the plate as supplied by motor registration and fitted in the manufacturers mount constitutued a dangerous fixture or fitting and as such contravened WOF regulations

had a contact who was an OSH inspector who gave me a very well written statement to the above effect

Hmm. So every distinguishing mark must be easily visible. Presumably the white bits are not 'distinguishing marks', so don't need to be visible. So you could cover all the white bits in black sticky tape, leaving only the letters and numbers showing through ...

I believe there are other rules about making plates hard to read, to cover things like those louvres that were supposed to make it hard for cameras to read them.
Measure once, cut twice. Practice makes perfect.

Haha, a nice idea, but doing so would mean that the distinguishing marks are no longer distinguishing. All in the intepretation of the text I guess.

Something along those lines has been done in Aussie. A mining company wanted to mine some limestone containing a significant cave system. The caving fraternity managed to get the cave protected, but by some oversight, a "cave" was defined as the void. So the mining company took the rock away and left the void there.

I had a mount almost exactly like OP's a couple of months ago, on the daytona.
It saved my ass from a van-mounted roadside camera one night.
However a month after when I was pulled over by a bike cop for speeding, he also did me for obscure plate, ca. $200 and 20 points from memory.
Bit of a gamble I guess, but I'd since gone back to a more-legit mount, and more-sedate riding, for peace of mind.

Registration plate not displayed in correct manner

Old tread, dug up by a google, my little hi-lite of the Year (Mmmm -- longer really)

Was just cruising a long the Wakefeild-Kohatu HWY (6) on the out skirts of Nelson, and got pinged by a pom Cop.
Ok -- was just over the 100k limit, Mmm , So Answered the Question, --- basicly -- But wasn't going to Thank this cop for giving me a ticket.

Then things got Mmmm -- a little heated.
Pom Cop Drags up my -- history, mostly over 20 years ago -- In doing this -- put me in a worst frame of mind.

Anyway-- Cop gets out his Camera and starts taking pics of my 999, which doesn't make me happy, ever worst with the BS answers to my Questions --- Why the Pics --- Cops first two Answers "Because I Can" .
After questioning the pics another two times -- got the Answer "your number plate is pointing towards the sky" --- Ok, its is on a bit of a Angle -- But not by that much, sure the hell isn't "pointing towards the sky"

Long story short, we parted with the the comment from the cop "Tickets will be in the Mail -- Dickhead"

He Then drives a couple hundred meters up the road -- parks up, in less than 2 minutes -- hes off chasing a RAV4.

I Waited a few mintues, and joined the tail end of dozing bikes that came along.

Think there is something in riding alone -- make you a easlyer target???

    Sure.

Until one day when you're caught with it in the up position.

(A bit like a lot of things in life when caught in the up position)

But to be honest, I have no idea if the fitting itself constitutes an illegal item)

I don't actually have that fitted to my current bike just to be clear... however I did toy with the idea of having it on a hinge so that when stationary it sits correctly, but when travelling at speed the wind 'lifts' it...

But yes your right - defo illegal when not visible!

Had one of these about 4 years ago (slightly different, bought off E-bay). worked well, was fast at flipping the plate (mine one was a flip-a-plate and flipped the other way)
What I didn't like about the model I bought, was the Ugly as Switch it cam with.

These are fine,as long as stated above -- you don't get caught by a cop (pom one at that)

If you do get caught --- things will get messy very, very fast.

as a foot note -- I was told -- a number of years ago --- and this could be BS -- "You Don't Own The Plates" , there for you can not change them or there mounting in anyway.

Any way, I knew when I moved back to Nelson that it was pretty heavily Policed (hence my past history)
But after this afternoons little -- Mmmm -- meeting--- My -- Mmmm --- thoughts ??? of the Police have gone basicly back to what I thought of them 25 plus years ago, when I a teenager.
