I'd guess sticking/dirty needle valves, or an air leak.

You need to allow for the Trademe factor.

If I had a bike that was running well then developed starting and misfire problems, I'd suspect electrics

If it was running well and I put it away for a while then it was hard to start and idled rough when I dragged it out, I think crabs and fuel system

But this isn't a bike that was running well then developed problems. It was passed on by a Trademe seller ( who obviously couldn't get it sorted) to a buyer who also hasn't been able to sort it. Realistically, he's probably not telling everything he knows. He's spent $1600 on the top end, I'd bet he didn't do that until he'd tried the cheap and easy fixes first.

Hondas don't usually smoke, smoke, hard starting, rough running is saying maybe worn bores and rings to me

Of course old bikes its always a bit of a lucky dip . You never quite know, just pay your money and are your chances . But myself I like to.factor in the worst likely scenario . Then if it turns out a simple fix I'm ahead of the game

It might.just be old electric and dirty fuel.Or it hmight not. You pays your money and takes your chances.

Still could be a good bike even worst case . Top ends been done, rebore and.bearings maybe $1000 and it'd be a good one

If it's very cheap and you have time on your hands, then why not?

If it isn't cheap and you don't have the time. Don't.
