I'm surprised to read how many actually do fall asleep on the back. So when you put all this into statistics, seems fairly safe.
I would imagine ACC would have a field day on this thought alone![]()

Have had Pillions fall asleep on the back of the bike. This is where as the rider ya need ta stay aware of the pillion behind ya. I can usually notice if my pillions nod off and keep my riding very smooth if they feel balanced back there. Have had a pillion that was unsteady back there when they nodded off. Was BabyB's Daughter. BabyB was very safe nodding off as a pillion. But her daughter would start drifting off to one side or the other. Ya could easily feel the difference. I would slow down & easy the bike to a stop before waking her. Had ta ride one handed while holding her steady with other hand as I pulled off the road. Very scary, I tell ya. A pillion can really effect the steering of ya bike, even a light 0ne. My advise as a rider is always stay aware of ya pillion at all times. If they are feeling unsteady back there, slow down & look for a safe place ta pull over.
Have had male pillions on the back usually after their bike has broken down & we need ta get back ta home so they can get a trailer ta pick their bike up with. The trouble with male pillions is that they are often insecure about holding on ta the rider with their legs or being close ta the rider (especially if the rider is also male). It's a Gay phobia thing. This makes they much more likely ta come off IMHO. Just another thing as the rider ya need ta be aware about & ta ride taking that into a count. Save the showing off for when ya on the bike yaself & it is only your life ya putting at risk.

MamaJo falls asleep regularly on the back and the only way I can tell is, if I hit the brakes, we get helmet 'dook'. However we do have quite a supportive backrest on a Givi pannier.
