Not illegally. They've merely started doing what they should have been already but lacked the information to be able to. See 5(1)(c).
That's the one!Except as otherwise provided in this Act, no person shall use any motor vehicle on any road unless—
the full amount of the appropriate levies payable under section 214 of the Injury Prevention, Rehabilitation, and Compensation Act 2001 in respect of the period for which the licence is issued has been paid.
If it wasn't for a concise set of rules, we might have to resort to common sense!
It doesn't stop you riding. It just means you'll cop a fine if the police stop you and decide to ticket you.
How much will that affect you? If you use the bike on the occasional weekend, probably you will get away with it.
If, like me, its your daily transport, and you do at least 75-80kms a day, it becomes a game of chance in which the odds are stacked hugely in the police's favour.
While I disagree with the reasons for the increase in the charge, and have protested (and will continue to protest) about the charges, I have no choice. I've been pulled over three times in the last month - once for a rego check, once for doing 116km/hr (my fault) and once for doing 102 (Queen's birthday weekend).
After July 1, I'm willing to bet the rego checks will increase. They've already started doing it on the Rimutakas in the weekend.
Its going to cost you hugely if you repeatedly get stopped. But it's your call.
My rego runs out on 7/7/10. So I have no choice but to pay the $520. With my recent luck I'll be fined more than that in one month.
And I to my motorcycle parked like the soul of the junkyard. Restored, a bicycle fleshed with power, and tore off. Up Highway 106 continually drunk on the wind in my mouth. Wringing the handlebar for speed, wild to be wreckage forever.

Well,I would ask myself:"how often do I get stopped or see a check point?Or even get tailed by a cop that might run my rego to see if is up to date?"
If the answer is rarely, then I would ride pirate style.
I think the biggest risks are parking nazis in cities.
My next bike will be a GSF 1250 livestock transporter registered as a farm vehicle, ACC exempt, for my worm farm -and I will always have a jar of worms with me to prove it.
Just had a call from my brother:He's laying a complaint with the Commerce Commission.
Councils are allowing full payment of new rate demands for the coming year at the existing GST rate. This is exactly the same situation with extending a licence expiry date.
Also I got a reply from BRONZ - they are having their lawyers look into the legalities of the situation
...
Like Mr Riffer said, there are consequences of breaking the law, like it or not. And since about everything that can go wrong for me recently has gone wrong, I'm disinclined to take the chance.
Actually, before I can ride again I also need a WOF and current insurance, neither of which stop the wheels turning, but both of which are show-stoppers for someone with some personal responsibility.
Redefining slow since 2006...
screw hold, de-register it become ALOT harder to charge or find someone with out registration...

Just looking at the MR1 "Renewal of Motor Vehicle Licence" form: sticker price is $321.24, so thats old price. I will fill in a MR27, and present them both together then shout at the drone that I want an invoice for $401.55 ($321.24 divided by 12 then multiplied by 15).
should be entertaining. WCS is I pay $321.24 for 12 months.

that first example is perfectly correct. The invoice is dated 1 July for the period 1 July 2010 to 30 June 2011. The taxable supply is made on 1 July and therefore the appropriate rate is that applying on 1 July.
In fact to do other would be to apply GST at the wrong rate. (presently the law allows only two rates, zero percent*, and 12.5%) * in certain limited but entertaining circumstances.
