Driver frustrations - Where do bikers stand?

A recent AA survey of their members, has come up with a list of the Top Ten driver frustrations.

Now we know that AA members are being led by an anti-biker, so there should be a fair amount of "anti motorcyclist" element in this survey.

Survey reveals Kiwi drivers' top frustrations.

Selfish drivers with a "me first" attitude are the number one frustration for Kiwi motorists, according to an AA Insurance survey.

Drivers who use a hand held mobile phone to talk and text was voted the most frustrating driving behaviour, despite a law change banning drivers using hand held phones in December 2009.

The survey results come from the AA Insurance Driver Frustration Index which surveyed 3270 New Zealanders aged between 18 and 65. The results were released today.

AA Insurance deputy manager Martin Fox said drivers not paying full attention to the road were rated second in the index.

"A driver who becomes frustrated or impatient as a result of inattentive driving is more likely to have an accident. These accidents can result in larger insurance claims as frustrated drivers can often drive at a higher speed," said Mr Fox.

He said most frustrations in the top ten were inconsiderate actions, including drivers who turn corners from the wrong lanes, drivers who increase their speed at a passing lane so they can't pass and those who slow down after the passing lane.

Other top 10 placings included drivers of slow cars that don't pull over to allow others to pass, drivers who don't use their indicators correctly and drivers who are not courteous while changing lanes or merging.

Tailgating, not giving way to cyclists and motorcyclists and not dipping headlights to oncoming traffic was also on the list.

Top Ten Driver Frustrations in the AA Insurance Drivers Frustration Index 2010

    1. Drivers who use hand-held mobile phones to talk or text while driving, despite the law change

    2. Drivers who are not paying full attention to the road

    3. Drivers who turn corners from the wrong lanes

    4. Drivers who increase their speed at a passing lane so you can't pass and/or slow down after the passing lane

    5. Drivers of slow cars who don't pull over to allow others to pass

    6. Drivers who don't use their indicators correctly (e.g. don't indicate or continue to indicate after they need to)

    7. Drivers who are not courteous while changing lanes or merging

    8. Drivers who tailgate

    9. Drivers who don't give way to cyclists or motorbike riders when they should

    10. Drivers who don't dip their lights for oncoming traffic at night

Now, with all of the ranting from a "certain" member here, regarding how bikers are perceived by the motoring population, this survey states the opposite. We are not seen as "maniac road hoons" but just the opposite (#9).

just playing devils advocate here, but its number 9, which probly doesnt require too many votes to get in, so 80% of the population could still hate bikers, and 10% don't really care, and the other 10% voted for number 9, of which 8% are probly cyclists anyway

depending on how the survey was actually applied, the top 3 could be the only ones giving a good representation of public opinion.

Ah yes but before this certain member began his 'rants' the official list was:

    1. Motorcyclists.

    2. Motorcyclists speeding.

    3. Motorcyclists racing on public roads.

    4. Motorcyclists failing to wave at other motorcyclists who happen to be in their car.

    5. Motorcyclists on Hyosungs (mostly) intimidating car drivers.

    6. Motorcyclists knocking off mirrors on cars.

    7. Motorcyclists taking up the footpath space outside cafes.

    8. Motorcyclists smelling bad after a long ride.

    9. Motorcyclists just being nasty.

    10. Motorcyclists lane-splitting and beating me to work.

I think his work is done.

Ah, come on. There is an element like that, they are that member's pet peeve (and I agree with him). But like all pet peeves, it has taken over that member's life like OCD, and he will wash his hands in public.

Otherwise - a very good result. Those gripes are heard on here often enough, so no real surprises.
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

For me it is 4 and 5 when in the car and 8 at anytime.

Being a biker, I don't trust indicators anyway, so I am watching more than just the flashing orange light to figure out if a vehicle is turning.

Probably my biggest 'peeve' would be the general aggressiveness from your average NZ driver.

Oh and just because it happened today, people who stand/talk/text right next to a pedestrian crossing but have no intention of actually crossing there. Please move away so I don't stop for you when you look like you are waiting to cross but are actually socialising!

I think you're taking the thread just a little bit too seriously.

It was only ever intended as an opportunity for the OP to have a little wank in public.

Was the survey a list of annoyances that people graded from 1 - 10, or was it a genuine open "what pisses on your goat" survey. If it was an open survey cyclist's and motorcyclist's might not have even got a look in.

My main annoyance are drivers and riders who can't realise that they themselves are the only ones whose behaviour they can control. Treat everyone else on the road like they were your dear old mum, and have patience.

It looks like your reading it wrong to me. It looks like:
Drivers who don't give way to (cyclists or motorbike riders) when they should
and not a complaint about motorcycle riders at all.

Add to that list - car drivers who sit in the right hand lane during passing lanes with no one on the left meaning that motorcyclists on Hyosungs cannot pass them.

It is confirmed that motorcyclists are not seen at all, let alone the in the survey.
