    Kapiti Coast Ride Outs

    Hey all,
New thread from the Kapiti Coast adventure massive!

I'll start us off with a 2 part ride this Saturday 19/6, that stormtrooper and me have formulated over a coffee break at work today...

    Here's the plans;

    Part 1. (Good 50/50 road/offroad tyres recommended)
Leave the Waikanae Coffee Cart at 9am, I'll be there from 8.30 with Stormtrooper getting a coffee.
Regroup and collect any others at Otaki BP (the one by the roundabout) 9.20am
Head up and over the Thomson track out of Otaki to Ohau, arrive at Ohau Cafe on SH1 at 12.30am
Lunch (not sure if open on saturdays - maybe ?)

Part 2. (Fine on Road based trail tyres like Trail Wings etc)l
    Leave Ohau Cafe at 1.30
Head North via some nice easy tracks and up towards Shannon, or see where we get to.
Possibly head out to Himitangi for a play on the beach!

Part 1. is an awesome track, a bit challenging in a few places but a steady pace and some keen helpers will get you through. Some really cool water splashes (not deep but long). Great views of the coast from the summit and a great descent back to Ohau.
Part 2. is a really fun track which is nice and smooth and wide, again great views.

I made the first part last year on worn out trailwings, but I wouldnt recommend it if you want to keep your bike scratch/dent free! 2nd part is big bike / bald tyre / novice friendly.

Weather looks good at the moment so come along and have some fun!

Not going to post this on a calender, we'll be going anyway so just turn up if your keen for some great riding.

A couple of shots to whet your appetite for saturdays ride

1st one is the view from the top of Thomsons at the back of Otaki.
2nd one is one of the coolest water crossings ever I reckon, and is on the way to the summit.
Even an old KLR looks good in this one!

    Tempted....?

Great, be cool to ride with you again Bart. Give Ward a nudge? And 'Marks' is a local-yokel so just waiting for his ugly mug to pop up as well

Weather still looking good on the Metservice website...

My weekend is filling up fast. I'd really like to have a look at that Thomson track thing, so I'll see what I can do.

    Hi all,
Just an update to the ride on sat morning stage 1 Thomsons track.
I have made contact with Land Owner as to access to the start of Thomsons Track, and he is all good with it, we can use the old farm road to get to the start which will make things a lot easyer. Good onya farmer Dave.

Dave mentioned that the track has not been used for some time and will be testing, also he said to the right where it forks is a track that runs for 2 or so kms into a valley, might be fun as a detour at the start.

Bart this is the track for you mate, hope to see you there.

Does that mean that we get to go through the boggy bits and then I can get electrocuted on that fence again trying to ride around a puddle!
Or does Farmer Dave's track mean I can avoid that 'shocking' start to the ride? Hope so!
Good on ya for sorting that out.

    Hiya Guys

Unfortunately I'm not going to be able to get there

Mt Thompson is awesome - pity its not a bit longer.

There is a great side trail to the south near the summit that follows the top of some hills heading back towards Otaki for a couple of km. Its a bit slippery but well worth a look

    take lots of photos

I'm also going to skip this ride but I did the Twin Peaks Trail Ride in this area a few months ago. So my suggestion is take the right fork before the bridge, across paddock becoming an uphill clay track, near the top will be a left fork - note this for later. Continue thru some logged pine trees at top of hill, go down other side about .5km?, take left track which will take you into a pine forest. Go to the bottom (house close to forest) & then return same way to top of hill. There is nothing technical but some bits may be greasy. The track should be easy to spot as 400 bikes did several laps.
We didn't ride the left fork (now on your right facing downhill) but it might possibly go thru to Otaki Gorge suspension bridge. Happy exploring

Yep, know where you mean. We've already talked about having a play up here if the ground is dry enough (esp that clay) I got as far as the "private road" signs from Otaki susp. bridge, ie.500m from the bridge, but reckon its an easy link up from the Thompsons side where you cant read the signs
Had a bit of rain recently so may be a bit of a mess up that first zig zag hill out of the paddocks though?...
