And... is it important to you?
A local man from Palmerston North has started a campaign to get more New Zealanders to learn their national anthem in Maori, in time for the Rugby World Cup.

Personally, I think its fantastic that he feels strongly enough to try and do something about it. I do know the words in Maori, although I'm sure I get a word or two wrong. Throughout my schooling years, were were taught both versions of the Anthem, and always sung one after the other. This makes me so proud to be a kiwi when I hear the Maori version sung, but how many people actually know the words?
As the man from Palmerston North said, it might be a rather embarrassing look when the cameras pan through the NZ crowds at the World Cup during the Maori version of the anthem, and few are getting the words right.
I know very little Maori, but I think knowing the Anthem is a good start, and makes me a really proud kiwi gal!![]()
