    SD and red mermaid,

I am interested to know what (resources?) you think would increase the police catching burglars/solving theft cases? I think everyone here would say that theft is pretty much an epidemic all over the country and I am inclined to think that is because currently the rewards are high and the risks are low.

Decent sentences would make the real difference.

We do catch them but you would hardly notice the difference it makes to their offending...

What if the burglars are the ones speeding?
Large screen tv's and a steady diet of KFC has sorta ruled out skateboards and push-bikes as a standard tool of the burglars trade around these parts.

most wouldn't be that stupid, speedings a surefire way to get noticed by the cops!

Just browsing through the police website and see that the resolution rate for burglary in the Central Districts is about 17%. Doesn't really give one much hope. I suppose most burgled goods just filter out into the community never to be seen again, by their rightful owners.

And remember that is a stat so can be manipulated in many ways. If you want further details I can PM you.

And as SD said decent sentences would help.

I can remember starting at a new station and my first job was to take a burglar to prison. This guy earned his living from burglary and was constantly at it, and occassionally got caught.

You would think after a few years appearing in court he would get something close to the maximum so the community was safe from him...Yeah Right!

I'd definitely be interested in knowing more. I guess the problem with burglars is catching them in the act, which would be quite difficult. And then the proceeds would just filter out into the community under the radar and would involve a large element of luck in recognising they were stolen goods.

How difficult would it be to have more patrols around the suburbs, given the seeming increase in burglarys in Palmy lately? I know that it's a matter of resources but it would be great to catch more of these guys.

Burglars are a bit like habitual speeders - they both only get caught now and then, not every time.

But the cop that catches them probably has a fair idea the time he catches them is the only time they've done it.
