Brynderwyn passing lane Police trap 80kmh

Hi all, yes, yet another kick in the goulies by land transport and local enforcement agency..... Some may know already, however for those who don't, the Brynderwyn Passinglane on both sides of the Brynderwyn Hill South of Waipu has had the speed limit changed.
Someone in all there wisdom, decided to make New Zealands longest up-hill passing lane an 80km speed limit area.
Much like the Dome Valley area, where they spent millions upgrading the roads which made them a heck of alot more safer and pleasant to drive, you know have to endure slow tripping for several kilometers.
I was riding up the Brynderwyns yesterday, completely unaware of the speed limit change, only to find 6 popo police cars pulling over at will in their new fly trap.... Again like the Dome Valley area, picking off easy prey, blissfully unaware of the new madness.
Yet there are signs, one on the southern side of the hill just as you come to the bridge by Atlas Concrete yard, and one at the beginning incline of the passing lane on the Waipu side.

I didn't get ticketed myself as the cops had full custom when I went past. They did give me a look though so perhaps they thought I was a worthy candidate......

I have to confess, the roading standards are turning to custard in this country, there is most likely going to be alot more 80km p/hr limit areas on the open road. Personally, I think if they can't make a bloody motorway nth to south thats 120 in this day and age then 120 politicians in beehive should be sacked, along with all the bureaucrats that make decisions with zero experience and second hand wisdom from a toothless ignoramus!

Funny !! For the limit to be enforced it has to be sign posted, and yet by your own admission you were unaware of the speed limit change.

I guess that means you didn't see the signs.

This afternoon camera van just past where the road works finish heading up hill from Waipu, very sneaky. Gets better though, just before the top the alarm gives a weak beep and red & blues appear over the top of the hill, cops looks at his screen , brake lights go on but no "U" turn. Buying a lotto ticket.

Yeah southbound is one of my fav overtaking lanes. Not too many corners for a bike but great blasting past slow trucks. It is pretty clearly signposted but had I not known about the change going over last weekend I would probably have missed them. So used to 100 k limit.

It is the placement of this reduced speed zone that I can not understand. Yes, there have been people killed on that road, but that can not be the only reason for the reduction. The southern side of the road is a given, you would be lucky to be able to traverse it at 100 kph, frankly even at 8okph you would be seriously pushing your luck, but a good challenge to the more adventurous riders among us

The northern side is a lovely piece of road, in fact I actually managed to overtake a truck up there on my GN250. Took me the whole friggen hill to get there but I did it!. Nice, wide, open, sweeping corners, up hill. Good road surface (did not even see patch sealing there over Queens Birthday weekend) as well, and this down at 80kph now. One of the loveliest bits of road around and we now have to putter up it, or risk a walk. Stupid, totally stupid. Difficult to see the reasoning why it has been reduced to 80kph, the cynics among us read $$$. Mind you, where I live it is amazing if you can find a bit of road above 80kph now.

I have no idea how long the longest passing lane is, but if you do get ticketed in an 80, especially a newly installed one, there is a possible defence. There is a requirement for the speed limit signs to be repeated at least every 2.6km. If they aren't then you have a valid reason for assuming the speed limit is 100km/h, as along as you have travelled that distance since the last sign that is. There is also a requirement for repeater signs in 60 and 70k speed limits and from experience many local authorities don't bother.

Speed limit fanaticism was always going to cause the average speed to decrease and along with it the funding for COPS Corp.
A catch 22 situation - it's either have clandestine teams cutting Joe Public's brakelines to get him to speed up or lower the speed limit on some of the straightest roads in the country.

Table 8.1 on page 24 of the 2003 Rule which can be found on the right hand side of this page here - http://www.nzta.govt.nz/resources/ru...t-2005-qa.html

The Rule assumes that 50 and 100km/h speed limits are obvious, but anything in between requires a repeater sign a maximum distance apart based on travel times, about two minutes if I recall correctly.
