Thing is the have done the same with diesel vehicles as motorcycles. i.e. they have taken the cost of claims associated with diesel vehicles regardless of who is at fault then charged the group as though they are at fault

Why didn't he ask the "General Manager of ACC Insurance"

"Why does the driver of a diesel van pay more ACC than the same driver of a petrol van?"

The whole ACC issue is just getting more absurd. Is it absurd enough now for New Zealanders to ask for it to be opened up to private insurance competition?

Wouldn't it be smarter to acknowledged the contribution that diesel owners make to lowering our international deficit not to mention being a greener fuel by offering owners of diesel cars lower registration fees rather than higher fees"

that doesn't make sense though, as diesels are likely to be heavier and less injury prone I would have thought, also bigger and less likely to be run into. I reckon they averaged a bunch of diesel bus accidents (more hurt people cost more per accident) and said it must be the same for all of them.

Very interesting point you raise Yachtie10!

Presumably they justifying charging diesel drives more, not because they are likely to make more ACC claims, but because they are likely to be driving bigger/more robust vehicles and are therefore more likely to injure other road users who will make claims

If the same logic were applied to other classes...Car drivers would pay more than bike riders because they are more likely to insure bike riders.

The more they play with it the more ridiculous the logic becomes.

Pedestrians are still the highest risk road users.

I think you are right but the anomaly is that petrol users pay an acc levies in the tax on petrol but diesel users dont pay that tax they have road user charges which dont have an ACC levy
maybe thats why the diesel charges have gone up so much
