ACC making faster bikes easier to own!

    Hi guys n girls,

have been thinking over the last couple of days, where id like to progress with motorcycle ownership in the next year or two. ive based my thoughts around sportbikes but you can apply the ideas to your personal steed category

im currently riding a zx6r 636cc ive been categorised into the upper ACC price category
    (hella dangerous! )..

All of us are affected by this classification, win or lose the price goes up, but the classification purely on the cc rating is going to have in my mind a bigger effect than just a difference in rego prices.

In terms of an already struggeling bike market from the recent recovering recession, this is going to take its toll on so many more bikers financially, more than it already has..

a few storys recently of people having no choice but to sell their pride an joy, 1000cc gsxr special editions and bikes that many have owned with so much pride and respect, work their life to afford and go through the 3 year licence process to finally obtain legalisation to ride!.

To be forced out of the already expensive game by a further increase in acc costs is a sad way to end the passion for what some live for every day, every weekend, every km of road...

With the impact of cc classification on the bike market im predicting a lot of CHEAPER 1000cc bikes, 750s, 675 daytonas and 636 ninjas etc, with people opting to settle for the 599cc to keep costs minimal (gsxr600, R6, new ZX6 cbr600) which are all awesome bikes, and i feel will hold their value in the 2nd hand market with more demand.

In once sence bigger faster bikes will be more easy to obtain, alot more to choose from on the 2nd hand market, possibly some bargains as dealers try to flick off old stock in the new year, quite alot of people will buy on impulse with worrying about the rego costs later, or if you break the costs down throughout the year its not overly expensive if your only means of travel, still a relatively cheap hobbie for the level of fun and overall personal satisfaction (cheaper than being a smoker and better for you for sure..)

the other hand 599cc market and below will strive, alot of people believe you dont need anything more than a 600 on NZ roads and todays examples are nothing to be laughed at, for sure the 675 750 and the supersports + extra have their benefits but are they worth the extra money come rego time?

with the increased avaliability of faster higher cc bikes for a nice price, will we see more people stepping into one for the overall ability these machines have, 2up, trackdays, around town, touring, fast riding?

if you pick one up for a huge saving price wise (say 3-4k under retail price), that gives you a few solid years even paying the full rego price before you feel hard done by..

would like to hear your input, obviously what ive said is open for discussion, its just what ive been thinking about and is no way set in stone,

hope it brings some valued ideas and discussion.. cheers

the difference from owning a 125cc from a 1000cc is just over $100,will it impact your thinking that much?

Not really, because if you can afford a nice 600++ bike, $125 will most likely be worth it just to ride that one bike.

People with more than one bike will be impacted more, is what I guess.

For $100 a year I don't think most people will be that bothered, it's either really expensive or slightly more really expensive.

I'm currently on 599cc but looking at heading upwards, I figure the extra $2 a week is worth it.
Riding cheap crappy old bikes badly since 1987

Seriously? if you let ACC make decisions about what bike you are going to ride maybe you need to reconsider your "real" reasons for motorcycling...

Not At all.... With two bikes over 601cc and a 250 all wof'd and rego'd,each bike its great for the purpose I use it so its worth the money despite the only downfall that I am paying the same rego cost for a bike thats 75hp as I am for one that is over 160hp

solution when I upgrade the 75hp bike,I will be looking at something in the 120-140hp range.....

more bang for your buck you could say

ive got no problems paying to use my 636, not going to put it on hold.. where did i state i cant afford it?

there are people out there who will look at the pricing differences and make their decisions based on that..

no need to get personal or poke stick, everyone has their own ideas.. input would help being a forum for discussion rather than lame remarks

Fair enough. But $100 difference is not going to create a depressed market for over-600cc bike. Nor do I think that multiple ownership will lead o the same. The hold facility will just be used more.
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

Untill that loophole is closed !
A girlfriend once asked " Why is it you seem to prefer to race, than spend time with me ?"
The answer was simple ! "I'll prolly get bored with racing too, once i've nailed it !"

    Bowls can wait !

Can't see that happening. There are too many valid reasons for wanting a reg kept live, but not in use.
What could happen is the fine for using whilst on hold will increase.
