Never give it a thought, don't go looking for gravel roads but will ride on them if that's what's needed.

By calling Harley road side assist, which is also for two years 24/7, they'll collect your bike free of charge and replace the belt.

And all remote rural areas have cellphone coverage..???

This isn't the same as taking a ride to your favourite caf downtown.

You're really clutching at straws now Noddy. You've been caught out talking shit...and you hate it. And it's cafe. Unless you meant taking your favourite calf down town?

Didnt Harley bring out a belt that could be used in emergencies? A split unit that could be installed without dismantling, had a joiner. But only a get you home solution?????
Yup ive shattered a belt or two in my time, but not from stones on gravel roads. Fresh tar and roadworks chip is probably the worst. Thats why ive gone back to shaft drive!!!!!!

I have done a belt or two myself. Never had one break, the worst was torn half the way through. OK I do avoid road works and gravel on my HD. All the problems I have had have been with roadworks not gravel.

HD do a splice in place temporary belt that could be carried easily in a bagger.

Big block belts are a PITA and expensive to replace. Sportster belts are easy to replace. The belts have always been in stock locally here in Chch.

any harley riders find that this is a prob on gravel roads??

bike shop owners tell ya anything cos they want you to buy their bike instead.. so wanted to check with some riders
Load of crap, lived on gravel roads for years and never ever had a belt snap yet. They are good for at least 30,000km which is twice what I get out of my chain bike. My Harley has less maintenance and is easier to work on. People that say such probably have little experience. I have a friend who has don'e 40,000km plus on his current belt, and its still looking good. He like me lives on a gravel road too.

Now is a great time to buy a bike, everything is cheap and there are some mean deals. Harleys and triumphs don't depreciate like other bikes too and stay in demand. They are prestige vehicles and have alot of nostalgia with them.

Mate in Dunedin got 110,000km out of his first one then replaced it as a precaution due to the fact it looked like a gorgonzola cheese.

Our two bikes have a total of 90,000km, not broken a belt yet - but have to admit I've replaced a belt on each bike as a precaution due to holes appearing in them.

Agreed, all the harley haters out there..... just remember that alot of the rice bubble's a belt drive too now. If they were that bad or unreliable they wouldn't sell em.
I never ride with doubt or issue, I do periodically check the condition of the belt though at service times. Belts are alot less maintenance than chains, by a long shot. They also don't get tight spots or require endless flippin tensioning and lubing......... Its worth mentioning, chains have there pit falls as well.

Best thing about Harleys, is my bike is worth more than I paid for it, and I have never lost money on any of the Harley's I have owned, and I have had a few..... All happy endings.
