    42nd Traverse Ride

    Hey Guys

Just wanting to know roughly how long it takes to do the 42nd Traverse, and if it is still possible to get in on bikes during September. I am thinking about going up from Cold Kiwi on the Saturday and doing the 42nd whilst im in the area, as it sounds like fun.

The time to get through will depend on how many of you are going and also the weather. The river levels are going to be quite high due to the recent rain. I don't think you would want to risk it on your own this time of year. However some of us did it in early summer (about 12 riders) and I think it took about 1 1/2 hours taking things easy. I hope this helps. Cheers

    From the DOC site.

"42 Traverse conditions: The 42 Traverse is closed for 4WD vehicle access from 1 May to 1 December. "

Not sure if this covers motorcycles though.

They do that every year and it seems to be specific to 4x4's over the wetter months. M/c's and push bikes go through all year. I've certainly been through quite a few times in between those dates.

I agree with the above, I wouldn't recommend going alone as it can be pretty wet and slippery and there's plenty of potential to get stuck between river crossings or slip off and do a leg in.

The actual track is only 35k long. Unless it's been raining a lot on the day you should be ok, nothing too difficult.

I got through it a couple of weeks ago on a KLR250 with worn dunlops (and first time I've touched off road for almost a year) - I'm sure you'll be fine. Just beware the slippery clay at the start - don't worry, it's not like that for the whole track.

Only problem would be the river crossings, but unless its rained heavily in the day or two leading up to it, you should be fine. There's only really one dodgy one that is about half way, so by the time you get to it you've got a decent ride going back anyway!

We ripped through it in just under 2 hours, but we were competing against daylight - my buddy was on a 2smoker with no headlight! I'd love to go back and do it a bit more leisurely, possibly even take a couple of photos... sigh.

Awesome, cheers for the info guys. Will probably have two others along with me, so should be fine for any tricky parts. We'll be just doing the main track, then heading back to the rally in time for lunch hopefully.
