KTM hard parts and other bits and pieces...

It wasn't too long ago that I ordered a few parts from two reputable KTM parts distributors.
KTM Twins in SFO and KTM-Parts.com.
I must have spent a small fortune on parts and pieces kitting out the 640A and replacing bits as required.
I have recently bought a 625SXC and decided to get a rack for the back of the bike. The price quoted here was around $340 for the KTM part. It is $124 USD at KTM Parts and shipping price would have still made it cheaper. Now I am not going to re-hash the plusses and negatives with buying parts overseas but I have found out this, forgive me if I have missed something but....

A message from ktm-parts.com regarding your order 48243

Unfortunately we are unable to send KTM Genuine Parts and Accessories outside the US. These select items have been canceled from your order. Please provide a valid U.S. shipping address or select from our Recommended Aftermarket Replacements and we will send the items immediately.

It does now seem that these guys and others will no longer ship internationally. KTM must have cottoned onto the fact that we here in NZ and Australia are buying parts, accessories overseas and STILL getting them landed far far cheaper than using domestic suppliers.

Oh well, back to the drawing board, maybe buy a USA post box or one of those fictitious US addresses that are advertised...

Ventura does make a rack for the bike, so, I may just go down that road for a fraction of the cost. It is a bit disappointing never the less... .

Saw that a while ago. Possible way around is to identify who makes the part (almost certainly not KTM) and purchase that way. If I remember correctly the "factory" rack for the 950 is made by SW motech.

Yep, some Aussie guys on ADV discovered that about 3 months ago, they will ship non genuine parts but nothing factory.

I've heard NZ's KTM parts distributorship is about to under a fairly major shake up with how it works, and will be connected to Australia so that any dealer can look up a part of see not only if it's in stock in NZ, but also if the Australian distributor has it and order from the Aussie parts stock if it's there.

Now that is another story... When I asked them to change my user name from the ADV ID to NZKTM (I wanted the same name for both sites) I got a message saying that I was spam and banned for life and no chance of ever re-joining. I sent numerous e-mails and asked why? Nothing ever returned and even Eddie and a coule of others went to the Mods... No joy there I am afraid, LURKER for life....
Rogerh is heading over to the US soon, but I don't want to burdon him for bits, he is gonna have a load of his own anyway....

There are numerous USA agent services you could use. Try searching for shop-usa.com or buyusa or something. IIRC the Aussie ADVers were using them. They also consolidate orders from one or various suppliers and forward to you in bulk, saving international shipping costs which can be ridiculous on several small items sent separately.

One of the other popular USA online KTM shops officially won't fulfill international orders, but through private email will sell anything to anywhere, I'm told.

Seems to me that the business model is behind the times. When you can land stuff sooner and for 40% of the local price, it makes you wonder why the dealers don't make those orders on your behalf, taking a modest profit margin. The manufacturers, governments and importers, all of whom take their own cut, need to get with the programme, 'cos sure as shit there's no rich dealers...

I once asked a dealer if they could overnight a part from east-coast Aussie, since there were none in NZ and it was a 2-3 week delivery on orders, and they looked at me like I'd sprouted a second head. I suggested that even if their information systems weren't linked, get on the phone, find one in stock, get it shipped, and I'll pay the retail costs for that - but just get the bloody bike mobile again. Another look like I'd sprouted a third head this time.
    Cheers,
    Colin

That & the local dealers won't even stock basic consumables common across a number of model ranges. Its pissed me off, & the US thing was the final straw. I do not enjoy having the lack of support keeping me off the road.

Fair to say I could have changed the way that I service the bike, but often its not obvious what needs doing until you open it up.

KTM is a quality brand. Its a pity that the support from the dealers is not. Rant & Tanty over, thanks for your time. Still love the Bike...

    Okay...

Buy USA.co.nz has a special at the moment NZD for a year subscription.
I have joined and I also purchased a part from KTM Parts.com. It will be interesting to see how long it takes to get to my address in Boise Idaho - home of the potato...
It will then be interesting to see how long it takes from there to NZ....They say allow a month. That isn't too bad, no rush...
As far as Customs, Duty and GST etc.....
I see by their tariff indicator Motorcycle parts are 0%....
I will be waiting for the e-mail to see when it arrives....
So far my bill for the part is just NZD $210 approx and not the $340 odd from KTM NZ...so by that measure the postage from Buy USA.co.nz would have to be over USD $90-100 to break even.....It ain't going to be that much as it will only weigh about 2-3lb at the max...
Colin, I did see these guys before and was signing up but thought KTM parts and Twins etc were still shipping to NZ...I didn't need it at the time, but now I have my own US Address..... Look out Ebay....

I buy parts, get them shipped to my mate in Fresno and he flings them over as a gift.

Where there is a will there is a way, anyone wanting parts we should get an order together to save shipping, got a few mates over the who can help.

    pack rack

I fitted a ventura pack rack to my 625 sxc, its made for the 640 adventure they share the same frame. Good fit quick to take on and off you can leave the side mounts on when enduro riding with no issue about snags. It cost about $ 270
