Basically you have 2 months while the fine is still with the issuing authority, once it has become overdue after those 2 months, the "infringement" is passed on to the courts, where EACH fine has $30 court costs added to it. You cannot usually make an arrangment to pay of your fines with the police. Once it has been passed with the court they will send out a NOF (notice of fine) then 30 day's later a FNOF (final . . . .) basically you need to contact the courts, which you can do by phoning the 0800 # and make an arrangement to pay your fines of. If you cant afford too much $$ a week, then ask them to do a "Statement of Means" over the phone, then all you need to do is make your living expenses slightly more than they are , and if ya lucky you could be granted a TTP arrangement at maybe $15-$20 wk, depending on how much you earn etc.
If you dont contact the courts within 30 day's of receiving your FNOF, they will then add $100 to EACH fine and can deduct str8 from your wages or benefit etc, or they could just issue a Warrant to Seize, sure you know the rest . . .
PM if you want any advice etc.
Yes, exactly what was said. Ahhh...the world of collections, such a lovely thing, so much so, I get to go and see all the fabulous people at work tomorrow, even though I am not going to be working! See you all then!

Oh, and PS, you can ring the PIB, but they will not let you pay it off.

Pretty much what everyone else said,
but when you get the letter from the courts, just start paying money on the fine. (you can do this at any post shop)

Eventually you might get a call for the ministry of justice to formalise the arrangement.

I think they only add on $100 if you're a bit shifty with them. I doubt they'd do it if you voluntarily started payments without having to be chased.

Must disagree with you there, if you don't pay it in full by the due date or make arrangements to pay, we will come down on you like a tonne of bricks, only giving you enough time to get up again so we can drop another tonne of bricks on you! $100 gets added on for every fine which is not paid by the due date and not under arrangement.

Maybe its different for different cases. I know I got a call from the ministry well after a month after the final due date on the courts notice.
I was under the impression that the $100 enforcment fee was only added if they had to get someone to reposess your stuff / take money from your income / bank account.

If you start paying off some of the fine before the due date, do they still come after you?

    Hey dude,
What happens is that the MOJ, have two contact centres in NZ collecting fines, the system that allows these contact centres to do their job is based on whether or not people in the data base have current arrangements or no arrangements or arrangements in breach, ie people not making payments that they have agreed to make.
Basically while you have no current arrangement (meaning you were in contact with the MOJ to make an arrangement) on your fines, whether you are paying them or not the MOJ's database will show no current arrangment once the fines have become overdue, and from there the enforcement process can begin. This is when the $100 enf fee is added. Now if you manage to get in contact with a decent officer they may "wipe" the enf fee, but you may be forced to pay more than you wanted to, as fines lawfully have to be paid of in a certain timeframe before an arrangement is entered into.
Basically it will save you a shit load of time and stress, if you just make an arrangement with the MOJ when the fines are still in an "imposed" state. That way you'll definately avoid the enf fees and annoying phone calls etc.
Sorry if I sound like a know it all, its just my job . . .

But they don't add the $100 right after the due date right?
Is the enforcement process when the MOJ actually decide to take your stuff, or when they decide to chase you up?

After they called me, my fines were put on hold for 3 weeks, however they were still on hold when I next contacted them 6 - 7 weeks later.
    Still no enforcement fee.

I've also failed to pay my weekly payment a couple of times.
I'm probably skating on thin ice.

    Maybe i'm just lucky?

The enf fee can legally be put onto your fines if you have NO arrangement, not paying etc the day after the due date on your FNOF. If it is put on then it usually cannot be removed.

The enf process can begin from the day your fines become overdue with the court, because they are no longer "imposed". The enf procees can be an automatic deduction from your wages, benefit or bank account, or warrant to seize property, or if none of the above apply then a warrant to arrest.

Maate, you were lucky!!! And yes you are skating on thin ice, cause if you come into contact with a "stuckup-im-so-important" collections officer than they will usually be quite nasty. They can demand that you make a payment in full, or they will take enf. If your lucky enuf to get a "normalish" CO then the story may be different.
PM if you need help with anything I'll see what I can (legally) do . . . .

Why? I think a bit of jail time would force these law-breakers who don't give a flip about paying their fines to think again! These types are a danger to society and themselves.

Cheers for the offer / advice.
I've pretty much sorted it out now, just a couple of payments left to go.

2 out of the 3 people I dealt with were pretty nice to me (both females)
1 guy I spoke to seemed like a bit of a wank

I'll try not to be so casual about it next time (if there is a next time)

    Sweet as dude.
Im really glad I don't do the collections anymore . . . . and to be honest Im not really as "into" my job as it may appear - Just been doing it way too long! Though I get to do all the "exciting" stuff now, like issue the warrants etc and not have to deal with the public!
    Good luck!
