Fkn pissed off

Had some extra cash so registered the bike for a year. 1st July 2010 through to 2011.
Three weeks ago was done by a hit & run driver - bikes been written off, so as part of the process ask about the rego,
Low and behold NO am not intitled to a refund either from the insurance company or Land Transport - what the F*#@K.............
As the bike is written off I'm sure they will deregister it - so why no refund on the years rego or part of it.

I'm I wrong in thinking this is a rip - ?

Same thing happened to me. I re-registered my Hyosung back in 2008 for a year and crashed the thing a few days later and completely wrote it off.

To my knowledge there is bugger all you can do about it except cut your losses and move on. I know how frustrating it is, I was so pissed off but eventually I just had to get over it and move on unfortunately.

At least there was a positive in your story - now you have a SV!

The insurance company will claim the rego $ back when they deregister the bike - they will do this as they take ownership of it when they write it off. I presume a uninsured private individual who deregistered their bike could do the same.

Technically, when a bike is written off, it becomes the property of the insurer, once they have paid out. They get to deregister it and collect the unused portion of the rego fee/s.
However, it doesn't always work out that way. I had a bike written off, that I wished to purchase back. The insurer had no problem with that, but wouldn't process the payout/purchase back until I sent them proof of deregistering. I got the refund from LTSA. The bike never actually left my possession.

Either way, the unused portion of registration IS refunded - to the legal owner/owner as on the papers.

If you buy a currently registered bike (ie: for the track) ... you can claim back the unused rego when you deregister it ...

If you can ... why can't they ???

I think you de-register a vehicle then re-register it if you put personalised plates on. So you must be able to de-register and get the unused portion of your registration back. I'd say this is a matter of current ownership, the bike will be de-registered by the insurance co - bet they don't pass that on to you.

Not quite ... personalised plates are no different than getting new plates after one is lost (around $9.00 from memory) ... I lost a bike one and 5 minutes at A.M.I. and I was bolting the new one on.

Deregistering means removing all details (of the bike) from the system.

was involved in an accident last year, bike was written off. I had only relicensed it that morning.I did a deal with the insurance assessor, retained ownership of the bike and accepted a lower pay out figure. The bike did not get deregistered. The only real bummer was that I had only put 3 months rego on it at the time, and although I rebuilt the bike well within the 3 month period, I never got to use it due to having my leg in plaster for those 3 months.

When I wrote one off my cars off I deregisterd it and a few weeks later I got a cheque in the mail for the remainder of the licence fees that I had paid.

Nope. That's just a change of plate number in the records. It's still known as Continuous Licencing in the system.
Be very careful before you deregister a vehicle. If you intend to put it back on the road, you will be up for a full revin, with all the associated costs like brake checks. Plus there'll be a note in the NZTA's system, which is a red flag to prospective buyers who check. Can make a big difference to the vehicle's value. Have you not been watching FairGo?
Better to put the rego on hold, if you can.

Hey - did I bump into you in a Featherston cafe (can't remember the name) a month ago? You were trying to eat breakfast and the owner's kid was interrogating you. I had Mrs B (interrogating me). I had the blue SV outside next to your Mille. If so - damn sorry to hear about you and your bike!

No not me - yeah pretty gutted its gone - bloody great bike, reliable, and a shame to see it go.
